A few days ago (maybe it’s been a week, I’ve been distracted and haven’t posted in a while, so I can’t be sure) we were cleaning the house- or getting ready to go somewhere, or both, we can be very good at multitasking like that- and while we were, one of the cats was perched on the back porch.
It was Peanut. For those of you who don’t know, we have two cats, Peanut and Popcorn. Peanut tends to be the more active of the two- going outside, chasing mice, running around the house- while Popcorn prefers to say safe and comfy in the house.
So Peanut was just chilling out on the porch. I could tell that he was looking at a vole of some sort that was digging a fairly large hole in our yard, and he’d been sitting there for about ten minutes, maybe even longer.
Thinking I’d be helpful, I tried to coax him back into the house, so that I could open the front door and he could go around back. When he didn’t come in, I went onto the porch. He was leaning over the edge, underneath the “fence” part of the porch (you know, the part there to keep people- or cats- from falling…)
He heard me approach and spared me only a glance, looking from me to the vole. Then, kind of suddenly, he looked at me, meowed once, then jumped.
No joke, he seriously jumped, from the porch, on the second story. I screamed and ran over to the edge and glanced down. He pushed himself off of the post once, landed on his feet, then proceeded to jump the gate and chase the vole.
You should seriously hear my mom’s theories about his logic…
