balancing the city budget

i discovered how the city is going to balance their budget and it’s quite ingenious! they retime the stop lights with photo cameras to only allow two cars through, then less than 1/2 second between yellow and red, so that 4 cars run the red light before reacting to the yellow. [i managed to get through on a green/yellow.] nevermind the fact that the intersection and all surrounding areas will be clogged with traffic. in just a few days time the budget should be balanced! i pointed out this plan to jeff as we were driving near the offending intersection and he said “oh yeah, i know… ummmm….” great! apparently it’s possible that we are contributing to the cause!

birthdays

this week was my birthday (thanks for all the well wishes)… one of my friend’s kids came up to me and said “You know, if you keep having birthdays, someday you might get REALLY old.” I’m not exactly sure how to take that.

breakfast in bed

i’m thinking whomever invented breakfast in bed was a genius… or NOT! breakfast in bed brought to you by a child is awesome… unless you were asleep, that might bring it down just a little 😉 then when you realize the dish is covered in syrup (on the bottom???) and now so is your blanket (that brings it down another notch… maybe even two). then you attempt to sit up in bed without spilling and still wondering what exactly has been handed to you (because you are still asleep). i was actually impressed with my breakfast in bed but then i needed a place to put the sticky plate. the whole point of breakfast in bed is to not leave the bed, right? of course, i’m done so i guess i “could” leave the bed… technically. but i’m sure the inventor of breakfast in bed intended for the recipient to stay in bed, i should accommodate that intent. a scrap piece of paper works! but then, now i’m still sleepy, still comfy in my bed… no way i’m staying awake. ugh, but if i were to bump that plate i’d either be covered in syrup or get it all over the bed or floor. now i can’t sleep! i decide to get up, avoiding the syrup on the blanket… i go wash the plate and then all the sheets & blankets on my bed (covered in syrup & crumbs now). evil breakfast in bed! hey kids, feel free to do that every weekend… it’s worth it!

check on your kids internet/phone activity

i usually login every month and check out what the kids are doing online and via texting on their phone.  last month something came up and i never go around to doing it.  this month our cell phone bill was DOUBLE!  turns out heather had met someone playing an online game (that we have approved), gave out her cell phone number and has been texting with the person in CANADA!!!  we talk to our kids all the time about internet safety and yet, somehow, we were vulnerable.  we laxed our restrictions and she broke the rules.  fortunately we discovered this but it could have easily been too late.  please learn from us and protect your kids.  KNOW what they are doing online, KNOW who they are texting, ask questions, ask specific questions (because questions apparently are NOT enough).

how to go through metal detectors

I went with a friend to pick up some paperwork at our sheriff’s office and realized quickly that I would need to go through a metal detector… UMMM… heart monitor?!?! The guard just told me to empty everything else from my pockets and come on through. They didn’t ask to see the heart monitor, just took my word for it that this box with wires from my pocket running up my shirt was a heart monitor. Couldn’t have possibly been anything else!? 😉 So, as I’m picking up the remainder of my belongings from the x-ray tray, the guard realizes that I left a hair tie in my “other” pocket and made a huge ordeal out of that. I had to take out the small circular hair tie… and she came out to inspect that pocket was now empty… still ignoring the one with the heart monitor. When I got home, I realized I actually had a thumb drive, pedometer and headset cable in the pocket with the heart monitor (yes, I’m a packrat). It was such awesome security to catch that rogue hair tie… Things that make you go HMMMMM.

paybacks…

A couple of weeks ago, Jeff and I left in the morning and I did not go walking with my neighbors. As we were leaving the neighborhood, we saw them walking and Jeff pulled up slowly behind them and honked! I knew right then… that was going to come back to bite me.

Today, Jeff and I WALKED to the pizza place a few blocks from here. (Mostly because Jeff is on a mission to win an Ipad 😉 ). As we were walking back, above neighbor pulled up behind us and HONKED. However, Jeff heard him coming and was not surprised. HELLO!!?!? I’m hard of hearing you could have warned me too! Needless, to say, the heart monitor works!

The thing about this neighborhood though… that will NOT be the end of that!

Bumper Cars… no…. car bumper!

Last Thursday I was driving back home in traffic when all of a sudden just over a hill a car bumper was laying across my lane. Please keep in mind the freeway here is 75mph! There was a car directly next to me and one right behind me. My only option was to “not quite” slam on my brakes and I nudged it with the suburban so that it would “spin” lengthwise and it moved over to the edge my lane. That was my intention so that hopefully no other cars would run over it.

I immediately pulled over to inspect if there was any damage. The car that had been next to me on the freeway turned out to be a K-9 police car! He pulled over with me. He had is “partner” with him so he could not do traffic duty but called in the bumper as a hazard. I got back on the freeway and just over the next hill, there was a semi-truck pulled over. YUP, it was one of those ones that hauls cars in multi-levels. This was full of wrecked cars and the driver was out on the load checking things over. I felt like pulling over and having a discussion with him!

SOOO, all this does is confirm my paranoia about driving behind those duplex trucks with vehicles on them!!!
