Pretty Sure I Was Home Alone

I was unloading the dishwasher but had walked into the living room, when I heard something back in the kitchen. I walked all around, went out on the deck, thought maybe the window fan in the dining room was loose & rattling, so I turned it off. I decided to go ahead and check the basement and the upstairs, where I found both cats [in my bed… with THAT look… “what? you asked earlier if we were cold???”] … I promptly forgot what I was doing and decided to go fix some hot tea [Yes, the cats are correct, it’s chilly in here]!

I remembered I was unloading the dishwasher, so I started steeping tea and unloading dishwasher, when I heard something in the living room. I’m thinking I have a loose rodent and I am just hoping it’s more alive than dead [I have good reasoning here… 1) we have cats! 2) finding a dead rodent is a LOT harder to do until it’s been dead a while and gives you a reason to smell it! and even then, you might not find it!] but I digress…

I never found a rodent. I decided that maybe this fan is loose & rattling, so I turned it off. It’s been very windy past 12 hours really rattling them & much chillier, so they don’t need to be on. [NOTE: we do not have A/C, we have evaporator cooler, so MUST have open windows. However, Jeff winterized it last weekend (go ahead and ask how that went)! So we do not NEED them open w/ fans anymore but it’s been exceptionally warm & dry… so they are on.] It’s getting pretty chilly now so… maybe I should go around and take all the fans out of all the windows… NAH!

I’m thirsty.

I was actually just standing in the kitchen near the pantry (yes, I checked the pantry for a rodent)… when…

SOMEONE SNEEZED!

right next to me?!?!

I spun around, went to the window, … re-checked the pantry, checked outside, went out on the back deck, kinda walked around the main floor… I am now very suspicious of… ASHLEY?!?

Follow my logic here… I know she’s not here, or I’m 99.9% sure, because I took them to work and left them there. Courtney & Ashley don’t drive, so the odds of them being here are PRETTY LOW. It’s the middle of a work day. So I’m thinking this is the best Halloween prank ever…. not sure “how” yet but that’s what I’m leaning toward. SOOO, I went down and thoroughly checked “Heather’s room” … I know it sounds crazy but I’m sure a few of you might remember the time I was NOT home alone and Heather was reciting next to her air vent…! NOPE, Nothing…

Ah, but then there is Will. Except, he’s not here either, or I’m 99.9% sure, because he and Jeff went golfing and txt’d me pictures…. Hence the “Pretty Sure I Was Home Alone” title. Back to the dining room vents 😉 NOPE… Nothing…

But by now, I have totally forgotten what I am doing… 😉

I’m still thirsty so I went to make tea, and found my steeped tea 😉 I have my mug of tea and I’m standing in the middle of the kitchen when….

SOMEONE SNEEZED!

I walked over to the window at the exact time “big brother” screams FOUND YOU! to “little brother” in the garden area near my window & deck (blocked view from the deck by a fence and blocked view from window because it’s “a lower flower bed” and it really is a good hiding place behind the rose bush… if you aren’t sneezing) [my neighbors grandkids]…

Life makes SOOOO much more sense now!

Jeff & Will Golfing 10/16/15

[pics incl] Jeff was asked to attend a golfing meeting for work today 😉 but he’d already taken the day off and promised to take Will to play golf… The vendors invited William to go as well! (it’s fall break, no school) Jeff txt me a picture of the gorgeous view from Arrowhead Golf Course.

Nerf Wars: Will & Josh… and Dalton

[pics incl] Josh texted Will to come over and followed up with another text a bit later: “bring a nerf gun… and some bullets.” William and I just looked at each other “with THAT look!” Joshua has absolutely no idea what he just started …. mwwwaaaahhhhaaaahhhaaa!

We knew of a stockpile in the basement and William has a pretty good arsenal going in his closet. One of William’s gifts from Roni and John is Dalton’s nerf gun collection [ http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2015/10/08/an-emotional-dalton-moment/ ]. We know some of them are modified because WE are the ones that introduced him to “modified nerf.” [we all take our nerf wars seriously in this neighborhood!] William has dumped out the container from Roni and has part of our collection nearby. We spent a few minutes sorting for duplicates, so he and Josh could have similar sets.

“Which ones should I take over?”

“All of them, of course!”

When we arrived, Josh came out and saw the trunk of the car FULL. At that moment, with the three of us armed for a nerf apocalypse, the trash truck pulled up in front of their house. The driver took one look at us and said “NICE! I’ll be back.”–in a pretty good Arnold voice, from Terminator

Josh’s grandparents are visiting from New Zealand and we explained that much of this collection started BEFORE William was born and it’s been fortified with Dalton’s personal stash. Will took time to share some stories about Dalton’s guns. Josh and Will posed for pictures to show John and Roni because they KNOW how much it means. Love these kiddos!

I took one of them “pre-nerf war” because there was some pretty interesting tough talk going on and grandpa was getting involved too!

An Emotional “Dalton” Moment

I was helping some customers and they had their teenage son with them. As we chatted, it became apparent to me that they were going on vacation for fall break (starts this Friday through next week)… and they were going ATV’ing in Glamis, CA. I was extremely grateful that there were no other customers in line, because I really needed to take a deep breath and prepare myself for what I was sure was going to be one of the hardest conversations I had experienced since Dalton’s passing. I NEEDED to tell this family Dalton’s story. And they NEEDED to hear it. Yet, I also knew that their lives would change dramatically once these words came out of my mouth. I was literally standing on a pivotable moment.

Moments are literally flashing before me now, as the teenage boy is just bubbling, over his new riding shoes…. The last time I saw Dalton, he was showing me his new riding shoes, before their trip… I just happened to be driving by, as he was packing up.

I asked this family if they knew the area, etc. Only the dad had been there, once a few years ago. I told them that it is important for them to know the area and regulations and to be mindful of other ATV’s and riders in the area and PLEASE follow the speed limit signs… and I could tell that I was about to get the “rolling eyes ‘of course’ we will” when I said… Because this young man (tapping the button on my jacket) was killed there. I proceeded to tell them Dalton’s story…

…They listened. I wished them fun and safe travels, and handed them one of Dalton’s cards…

… And silently asked Dalton to watch over this family… so excited to go on vacation with all of their new toys… and their 15 year old son.

Happy Birthday to… ME!

[pics incl] First there was food, then presents and cake, AND THEN… we had a “Ha-Ha!” [http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2014/12/09/a-ha-ha-with-cats/] My head was bothering too much to go out so we “brought in” food from Maggiano’s (a nice Italian restaurant not too far away). I opened some gifts, had a bow on my head… I cannot remember WHAT I said that made everyone reach over and touch my face but it made us all laugh, so I had them “stage the scene” again for photos 😉 You’re welcome 😉 And all three of them sang to me in Chinese… I can only assume it was “Happy Birthday” because “I” do NOT speak Chinese.

Courtney decided that she was going to watch TV in my bed, so we all conspired to go up in shifts and create “A Ha-Ha.” If you’ve never had “a ha-ha” you should try it 😉 Unfortunately, there are no photos of this but it was quite amusing as all of us piled on top of Courtney! Thank you for all the birthday emails, phone calls, txs & FB posts, it truly was amazing just how many people reached out! Definitely made me think of how life could be totally different right now. Thanks for all the love and support!

Lunch with Shelbi and Andrew 10/03/15

[pics incl] Jeff and I were in Colorado Springs so we picked up Courtney’s friend Emily and met his cousin Shelbi and “Shelbi’s Andrew” for lunch. [Shelbi is his cousin, Christi’s daughter]. Emily snapped some photos but we never took any with her (SORRY EM!). We went to Crave Burgers where every burger is an adventure 😉 Most of us could barely eat half of our food; that includes Shelbi’s interesting concoction! Had some great laughs and an awesome visit!

Camping Off-Grid 09/24-09/27/15

[pics incl] Jeff and I took what has turned into our “annual camping trip” the past few days (our anniversary is Tuesday). We have basically been “off grid” although we did have some texting ability. Courtney, Ashley and William went to spend a few days with Velma and David and they had the pleasure of hauling them around 😉 THANK YOU! It was a very nice feeling to know we didn’t have to worry about a thing.

A sheriff’s deputy appeared, a few hours after we arrived, to say that they just ordered a “burn ban” for this area and he knew we did not know because he just hung up the signs out front. We had made a point to check on our way into the campground. Soooo, no campfires this time (totally understandable though and we’ll just switch to ‘plan B’, propane stoves).

Some Beverly Hillbilly Golf and Dinner
