Neurology Appointment 09/30/14

Jeff and Ashley went with me to my neuro appt today. Sigh, apparently, Stacy and Ashley went to my appointment with me last time [ http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2014/03/13/neoro-appt-031314/ ] and although I can sit here and read all about it… I have no memory of it?!? I’m a little startled/alarmed, to say the least! 🙁

Obviously, I’m having memory issues but I guess that’s the “new normal” for me. Using the past several months as a baseline, I guess I’d describe life as “new normal.” Head hurts but with a combination of “dealing w/ it” and managing pain w/ Tylenol and “resting when needed,” I can usually function. I do have days where I have to abruptly stop what I’m doing but I guess we are all becoming accustomed to “new normal.”

I teased the doc today, that I’m allergic to him, because yesterday my head really started hurting again, enough to stop me in my tracks again. 🙁 I took several showers overnight vs. drugs so that I could participate in the appointment and “show him what’s up.” My left arm still does the crazy “gets really cold and tingly.” Doc talked to the surgeons but at this point the consensus is that anything invasive could cause more harm than good. Also, the aspirin back in April, really didn’t make a difference and could also cause more issues so we aren’t doing that again either. Doc asked if I sleep elevated, and I replied sometimes. “Often, the pain doesn’t allow me to lay flat and other times I wake without the pillow. So I figure, my body’ll let me know what it can/cannot do…. or I’ll wake up dead.” They (Doc, Jeff & Ashley) didn’t appreciate my humor much. 🙂

Since this is “new normal,” I’m pretty sure this will pass again, eventually, w/ pain management and “keeping off my head” for a while. While I can’t say “it only lasts 2-12hrs,” usually within a couple weeks, it’s subsided enough where I am back to “new normal.”

Some of you have asked if my head still hurts. Yes, it pretty much hurts all the time. It’s still hard to describe. Sometimes, it’s pretty sharp pain right above/near my left ear and if it’s sudden, it’ll take my breath away and literally stop my in my tracks. Sometimes is a “heavier” pain that kinda starts up by my ear and aches thru my neck and shoulder (often my left neck near shoulder is very swollen, obviously draining slower). I cannot do too much when it’s like that either. Both of these often affect my thinking, vision, speech and left arm movement. If the coldness in my arm shows up too, I need to immediately lay down and “get off my head.” However, most of the time it’s like… more than a headache… like someone has put a very tight, heavy helmet on my head/neck (but only on the left). So it hurts, but as long as I don’t make sudden movements or encounter sudden LOUD sounds… I seem to be able to function. It’s slower than I prefer and I can do less, but for the most part, I truly don’t think “YOU” would notice, not until you spend some “quality time” with me 🙂 So yes, my head hurts “all the time.”

I’m actually more concerned about the memory issues… Basically, I’ve described it as “IF, I knew something prior to clot, I can usually get it back, sometimes I need your help remembering, or getting the correct words. BUT… if it’s been “since clot” I cannot guarantee I will remember.” 🙁 I’m actually glad that I’ve been journal/writing/blogging for years (18?) and that’s a habit, because it seems that’s the only way I’m gonna have “memory” of “new” things.

Appreciate all your thoughts and prayers!

Missing Dalton

I’m pretty sure there is no right or wrong way to miss someone. We all miss Dalton [ http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2013/12/30/ultimate-grief/ ]. I’m not gonna say “some days, more than others” because that’s not it, we certainly miss him everyday but I guess some days, others realize how much we miss him.

Today was a “truckful of neighborhood kids” day and we all discussed classes and teachers and former classes and former teachers. Argued about which classes were best, etc., and Dalton’s classes were right in there too!

I had some tears and ya know what, I’m ok with that. As far as I’m concerned, it’s perfectly fine for me, or you, to laugh and cry at the same time and it’s not that it’s “uncomfortable” to talk or think about Dalton. So what if it makes us cry? I’m not going to stop talking/thinking about him over a few tears and I’m pretty sure all the kids feel the same way; neighborhood kids included.

It’s difficult for me to “not bring Dalton” home to them every day but I think John and Roni should know how much we incorporate Dalton’s memory into the little things we do every day. I keep saying we should tell them more often how we feel, not just John and Roni, but all of our neighbors. I’m sure they feel the same way and just do not know how to articulate it… neither do I… Just writing from the heart.

Today, was a day I’m glad we shared memories of Dalton.

Camping 09/26-09/28/14

[pics incl]  We went camping this weekend.  We were all going until Murphy’s Law kicked in 😉  Heather was working, Ashley spent a couple of days being pretty sick and Courtney is in China.  The kids sat around and decided that we should go camping without them, like we did a couple years ago (our anniversary is Monday).  [ http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2012/09/30/off-grid-for-48-hours/ ]  So… we did 😆

This time, we had cell phone service?!?  One of Jeff’s co-workers mentioned a gun range (which we had planned to take William someday), and it turned out to be less than a mile from where we were camping!  We spent about 3 hours driving all around everywhere (mostly because I cannot be in the sun and haven’t bought a big, obnoxious, sun hat yet!).  We realized that we really weren’t that far (as a bird flies) from Indian Creek campground and the fishing areas the kids have all been talking about recently.  Ashley has been trying to paint some scenes from memory so we snapped several photos for her cause.

It was relaxing and peaceful, except when some music student practiced playing trumpet… then, not so much. Jeff thought the kids would be amused that “I” was helping him hitch (yup, missed the kids!)! And, to top off the end or our trip, we had to wait for the tail end of a motorcade of motorcycles (obviously, some major event near Conifer), I stopped counting around 1000! No where near the 150K in Galveston but brought back memories 🙂

Courtney Sat in My Lap

[pics incl] YES, Courtney is in China and NO, I am not in China. The TV was on “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (Kevin Costner)” when she appeared suddenly on Skype. And then … Robin Hood dropped the church candelabra chandelier on her head… and I had to laugh, and then we had to explain, which made her want to watch TV.

So, I turned the laptop around but that was too close, so I sat down and said “there you can just sit in my lap” which prompted everyone “AWH!” and “pulling a me…” Jeff took pictures of “Courtney sitting in my lap.” (She’s waving to you…)

First Day of School… in China!

[pics incl] Courtney starts class on Wednesday morning but that is Tuesday night here. We Skype’d before her class and I ordered “first day of school pix” from both girls (and I fully expect them… AHEM!).

FYI, Courtney said she’ll be randomly blogging again so go check it out: http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/courtney/category/posts/

There’s also a link, over there, ———>>>>

Peanut demands that we open Courtney’s bedroom door and PROVE that she is not in her room. Today, we had her call out to him while he was in the other room…. he leapt up behind my laptop 😉

Rainbow 09/22/14

[pics incl] When I picked William up from school, we saw some incredible clouds back toward our house, then we saw a bit of rainbow. He snapped a picture and another one as we pulled into the neighborhood. Photos do not do the view justice, as the rainbow is behind the pole in second photo.

William’s Project

[pics incl] William’s new school is all about projects and he is taking a video class. He started talking about an anime creation or NDK cosplay (I could be mixing up his project w/ Heather’s NDK cosplay characters) and next thing I know, Heather and a group of her friends agreed to be “characters” in his video. She drove everyone to a park for some action shots and it promptly rained, so they headed to the mall for Plan B. Video is in editing 😉 but I requested group pix for the blog. (I was thinking ahead 🙂 ) [AND… whenever they actually GIVE ME the pictures, I will post them!]

I threw in a few of Heather’s cosplay because she was chosen for the Fairytale Play. If you want details, get her to blog about it 🙂 (I think she has some on FB).

Ashley’s Homecoming 09/20/14

[pics incl] Took some pictures here of Ashley and Britton. Of course, tradition dictates that they make an appearance at Burleigh and Patty’s! I think maybe his mom truly appreciated that 🙂 Also, took some darling photos with Britton’s little sister. 🙂 and William chatted up his little brother.

William’s New Golf Clubs

[pics incl] William has grown so much that his kid clubs were affecting his game. New teen clubs will be broken in tomorrow. 🙂

Apparently, his game is back, but now… his shoes are too small! 😉

The Humidor

[pics incl] Jeff had another “offsite meeting” today, otherwise known as a golf tournament. [last week was shooting: http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2014/09/12/jeff-at-work/ ]

He won a raffle of “A humidor and 45-50 cigars.”

Ummmm, Ok? [I’m envisioning something along the lines of that Dim Sum we attended with Kevin ;-P http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2012/05/06/dim-sum/ ]

Dinner by William

[pics incl] William has not mastered the login system at school and managed to get locked out of his account. “Now what am I supposed to do?” Being a practical “non-cooking” parent, I replied “Cook dinner.” He decided this was acceptable because Jeff is not home 😉

Re-piercing Her Ears

[pics incl] Have your ever heard the story about “the kid at the doctor’s office that required FIVE people to hold her down to get shots?” Yah, that is a TRUE STORY, about Ashley! She had her ears pierced as a toddler but never really wore earrings (especially when playing basketball).

She suddenly decided to re-pierce her ears…

She has a date to Homecoming next weekend….

Jeff, took her dress shopping (yes, he’s a pro)!

6355 Miles Away

[pics incl] Courtney and Claudia Skyped us while they were getting settled into their dorm (6355 miles from our house). Apparently, they had to “clean first” because “MOM, there were bugs and spiders! So, we wiped everything down with WetOnes.” ???? There was a story in here, about going to the store to buy cleaning stuff, but they didn’t know how to say “bleach” in Chinese.

They will be getting up each morning by 6:00am… because there are military calisthenics right outside their window. 🙂

FYI, Beijing is 14hrs AHEAD of Denver, do the math before texting her!
