E-mealz

A friend recommended this site to me and we’ve tried it out.  I wasn’t assuming that we would like every meal, every week but it is a nice quick way to learn to plan meals and corresponding shopping lists:  http://www.e-mealz.com/

[NOTE:  We only used this service for about 6mo.  While I found it to be extremely useful overall, the prepared menus just didn’t fit our family tastes.  I would love to find something like this that allows you to pick/choose your recipes AND that uses healthier options instead of “prepacked” solutions to save time]

i did NOT burn down the house

thought i’d share one of my fb posts for your amusement:
“for the record: no smoke detectors were activated while cooking monday night’s meal… so what if you had to open the door… both doors…”

a dr. suess moment

we have been sanding & painting the ceiling all week and therefore took the door off the main floor bathroom (that’s posed some interesting scenarios itself … hehe).  today, courtney was attempting to tape off the bathroom crown molding so that we could paint the ceiling.  she was unable to reach up over the sink/cabinet, even on a stool, so she just stepped up onto the sink.  she quickly realized that the vanity lights were HOT and made it dang near impossible to reach over them… so logically, she turned the light off.  i was painting out in the hall just outside the door, so i knew all of this.  jeff however… did not!  a few minutes later, he was going to wash the paint off of a paintbrush and went in the bathroom and turned on the light.  without skipping a beat, he notices courtney “in the sink” and turns off the light, steps out and states matter of factly, “there’s a kid in that sink” and goes on his way to find another sink.  you’d think that we keep kids in our sinks on a regular basis!

[NOTE: it’s Seuss]

one pound

ya know, one pound really isn’t that much… think about it. take butter… it’s four sticks… unless you plan to eat all four sticks in one sitting, it’ll last awhile but it really isn’t that much. now take salt, again… one pound of salt would last a while and still not take up too much space! now, make that SAND… more specifically drywall sand (having been sanded off the popcorn ceiling) and place that sand in your hair/scalp. THAT’S A LOT OF SAND! one pound of drywall sand is just about the maximum amount that will rest on your head without leaving a trail behind you. heather and i know this for a fact as we spent the better part of a few days sanding the popcorn ceiling. as a corollary to the maximum amount of sand that will stay in your hair: it takes at least four washings to remove it from your hair/scalp!!!

however, i’d say it was worth it as our ceiling looks SO MUCH BETTER NOW! come visit, see for yourself!

an “extended family” loss

i consider some of my best friends… “EXTENDED FAMILY” and their family is included. it’s not like i have a small family for which to compensate as both of my parents are 1 of 8 children. maybe this makes me keen to include more special people in my life. i’ve always called my best friends’ parents “mom/dad” and their grandparents/aunts/cousins, etc were also mine. on this note, i also consider the “extended family” of others to be just as important. if you were to spend any amount of quality time (say at birthdays or holiday gatherings) with my uncle rick and aunt cheryl, you will encounter the manusov family. they have been a peripheral presence at rick/cheryl’s for just about as long as i can remember. it’s not like we exchange birthday cards or anything but i know that this family is just as important to rick/cheryl’s family as blood relatives. they are in fact… a second family. so it pains me to know that one of the manusov children passed away last weekend from an epileptic seizure. i know this loss is paramount to my aunt/uncle’s family and i think about their sadness and grief and know that they share this loss as if it were one of their own children… maybe one of my “extended cousins.”

as i shared the story of the manusov loss with others, i realized that epilepsy is much more common that i had ever known. i suddenly realize that it’s all around me and i never knew. i also realize that the abrupt loss from epilepsy is also fairly common. i’ve learned a lot about “special dogs” that can sense the onset of a seizure, even before the patient.

sending thoughts and prayers to all of my “extended family”

TADA! 2 cars in the 3 car garage

we spent part of the weekend cleaning out the garage(s) so that we could park both vehicles in it during bad weather. we randomly do this which often prompts the neighbors or just passers by to stop and ask if we are having a garage sale 😉 it never lasts long though as we discover new ways to utilize the space. as in this case… it lasted ONE WHOLE DAY before we decided to disassemble furniture and arrange it in the garage. that may sound strange to you but it’s actually something we do on a regular basis around here 😉 this time we put the furniture out in the garage in preparations to remove our popcorn ceiling and finish painting our main floor… which i’m sure will be a whole other story in itself. here’s hoping that when we finish that project we will be able to park the vehicles back in the garage!

a long lost child arrived…

although we did manage to visit with jim this summer on our whirlwind trip… he has not been here in a few years. he decided to grace us with his presence the past few days and now we are spoiled 😉 he cooks, cleans, plays with kids… you should get a “jim” for yourselves 😉 jim was actually in town for a denver marathon on sunday and hung around with us to acclimate to the altitude before the race. one day a neighbor drove over with a million apples from his yard (hence why he drove) and jim proceeded to bake homemade apple pies… MMMMMMMM. we also “returned some apples” to my neighbor (in form of a pie). thanks for hanging out jim… don’t be such a stranger!

i finally got to drive the car!

the new car would make random appearances at home but was never here long enough for me to really look inside, much less drive! i FINALLY got to drive it to pick up william from school. it’s not the bmw but it drives nicely and doesn’t seem to be falling apart at the seams, which is a huge plus when driving a car!

goodbye BMW

we said goodbye to the 1997 BMW today. it was a good car in its day but it just kept having “little” problems that were starting to add up. please welcome a cream-white 2008 PT cruiser to the family 😉
