and, it may NOT be your thyroid

I wish I had known a little more about thyroid symptoms before having radical surgery.  Obviously, since mine was malignant, surgery was the correct option, but I really was NOT informed and spent at least 2 years prior in therapies that were not working.  I always wonder if I had changed the type of therapy, took my meds correctly, or looked for another cause of my thyroid symptoms… I wonder, if that would have slowed the growth and allowed for a different course of action…  One of those things that make you go hmmmmmm.

I have since learned that there are many things that can cause thyroid symptoms and one of my doctor’s I had at one point, recommended a book to me:

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Hypothyroidism: A Simple Plan for Extraordinary Results
by Kenneth Blanchard , MD, PhD, With Foreword by Mary J. Shomon

I learned a lot from reading this book.  You may find it a bit extreme, however, take it as a resource and do more research.

Low Iodine Diet (LID) or 50-mircogram iodine diet

I’m sure when you heard those words you thought “no salt”… but it’s not “no salt” it’s LOW iodine (so non-iodized salt is fine).  When I first had to do LID there was VERY little on the internet to help me.  My doctor handed me a list of iodine nutrients in foods, it was a copy of a fax of papers that was several pages, yet missing one in the middle.  I’ve tried to find the original publisher but never succeeded.  Here is my list of crazy LID resources… and NOW there is is an LID cookbook (bless her!!);

me & my heart… monitor

so if you’ve been reading my fb posts you know that my heart murmur is acting up… enough to compel the docs to hook me up with a 30day monitor. Today (09/01/10) I had to go in to get it. I’ve been seeing these folks every couple of months (for thyroid) for years so I know them pretty well. The nurse was connecting everything up and was explaining how everything works and said “Now, you need to just act normal during the next 30 days and it’ll just do it’s thing.” So I promptly sat up straight, folded my hands in my lap and put on a “I’m an angel – straight face.” AND IT WENT OFF! I didn’t touch anything, promise! She pretends to “slap me up side the head” and told me “I said…. act…. normal!”

More thyroid resources found…

I spent hours scrolling through websites for information… I’ll spare you a bit of the search as many of these you could follow for hours and get lost.  I looked “LEFT” and “RIGHT” and all the extremes and naturalistic and mainstream.  I offer no warranty regarding the information you find, just a starting point.  As, always, it’s a great idea to talk things over with your doctor… did you get a second opinion?  It’s good to have a lot of information but it’s also an overload.  You need to STOP… take a break and come back.  This list will help you do that too.  [please send me your favorite links if you like and I will add them to the list]

Radioactive Iodine (RAI) and Thyrogen

You might be faced with surgery or just radioactive iodine treatments (RAI).  There are some different options regarding RAI procedures.  Your doctor may ask you to follow a low-iodine diet (keep in mind, this is not low salt… you can have salt… just not iodized salt)… it’s a tricky experience.

One of the options that you may hear, regardless of your low-iodine diet status, is called Thyrogen.  This product has been on again/off again in the US market so keep a watch on it’s current status.  This is a series of shots your receive prior to RAI treatment that allow you to continue to take your thyroid hormones instead of stopping cold turkey (which inevitably sends your system into a shock of sorts… I’ve been there a few times now)  Thyrogen eases the hypothyroid symptoms, if not preventing them entirely.

Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association

A great place to connect with other people that have Thyroid Cancers.  There are literally TONS of resources here, you can get lost.  I started you out on the “questions” page… I’m sure you have plenty:

You’ve probably heard words like radiation or RAI and along with that, the Low Iodine Diet.  The Thyca website will help you begin to navigate those terms and processes.

Thyroid Drugs: FAQ

While there are a LOT of websites out there re: thyroid health, many of the studies, many of the articles, many of the suppositions are by the same circle of pharmaceutical companies, or same authors, etc… You will come across some of the same names on multiple sites.  That said, here’s a pretty good list of Frequently Asked Questions re: thyroid meds.

http://www.thyroid-info.com/articles/thyroid-drug-faq.htm

I’ve also found that thyroid hormones are sensitive to temperature changes (i.e. bathroom cabinet near shower, or purse left in car, may not be good options).  Some thyroid meds are also sensitive to those scans done by the post office… check with your doctor!  (When I come across the info again, I’ll post it here).

Sometimes, not getting what you want… is a good thing!

Jeff is taking a business trip to San Francisco. He got his approval a bit late and was unable to book the hotel he really wanted. Not a big deal really but something to plan around as he is not staying in the hotel where the conference is hosted. As luck would have it, the Rockies are playing in San Francisco this week so he was able to buy tickets to tonight’s game (08/30/10). Courtney, being Courtney, begged him to take her with him. She is dying to shop in San Francisco and go to a Rockies game out of town…. too bad, she has school.

He obviously was checking into his hotel before the game… and I get a text that I can only imagine… IMAGINE THIS: Jeff screaming at the top of his lungs… repeating the same thing over and over and over… THE ROCKIES ARE IN MY HOTEL! THE ROCKIES ARE IN MY HOTEL! THE ROCKIES ARE IN MY HOTEL!

Courtney is crying 😉 (NOTE: she claims she can still get a flight and make the other 2 games this week).

Wonder which hotel Jeff prefers now?

Baseball… or NOT

censored: a friend (who shall remain nameless) was discussing baseball (normally a football fan) and said “what’s it called when you get to 2nd?” without skipping a beat i replied “a little more than kissing” … i’m going straight to hell!
