We are Ashley’s family… again…

Do you remember when Ashley was a toddler and we’d go camping at Yogi’s and she’d run around telling people her name was Ashley and then later demanding to know “Do you remember my name?!?!” It didn’t take long for the rest of us to become “Ashley’s family.” It was a “thing”… we were Ashley’s family, we had no names, and we were fine with that! She didn’t understand the word stranger and how do you convince a toddler that the 50 people eating dinner at grandmas are “family” and it’s ok to let them hug you, and the 50 people eating at Yogi’s are strangers? When she was about 6 years old or so, she’d frankly state that they weren’t strangers, “they are just friends I haven’t met yet!”

Over the years she has kinda learned the difference between a stranger and “friend you haven’t met yet” but she’ still very outgoing and loves to meet people.

Flash forward to tonight…

We are at La Fogata and have been coming here for what… 5 years now? As we were eating and visiting with Jaime, the lights suddenly dimmed, changing the atmosphere and mood of the restaurant. I teased Jaime and said it was apparent that we needed a romantic mood with 4 kids at our table! He replied that the owner had just arrived and he liked the lights dimmed. We have seen him several times before, he “kinda” knows who we are and has even given up his table to us in the past when the restaurant was packed and we wanted to be in Jaime’s section 😉 But we have never officially met him… yet.

Ashley stated matter of factly that it was about time, that she was going to march over there and introduce herself. We believed her. She started teasing Heather to go with her but we all decided that she should do this herself… Ashley style. And she did.

Next thing we know, she is over at the bar, shaking hands, pointing at us and carrying on a conversation about God only knows what, with the owner of La Fogata. We are all laughing, not because we are embarrassed, but because we know exactly what is transpiring “Hi my name is Ashley…” and the rest of us are about to become “Ashley’s family”…. again!

Several minutes later, the owner walks Ashley back to our table and says “THAT WAS AWESOME!” He introduced himself as Scott, said we should have no trouble remembering his name 😉 and offered us a free appetizer. Since our food was already headed out, he promised it for our next visit. Later, as we were leaving, he shook Ashley’s hand again, remembering her name, inquired about her high school and made Jaime promise to give us the appetizer on our next visit.

Yup… we are “Ashley’s Family”… and I don’t know about the rest of them… but I am totally fine with that!

Jaime missed us!

Heather came home from school for spring break and we headed straight to La Fogata to see Jaime (Hie-mae).  We realized that we had been in a couple of times when he wasn’t there and it had actually been several months since we have seen him.  Jaime is part of our family and he had been so worried that something had happened to us… Jaime missed us.  AND WE MISSED JAIME!  It’s been far too long since all of us have been together and the smiles and the good food and awesome service made our evening spectacular.  We spent time visiting with Jaime and “since we’ve been gone” his wife had a baby girl.  Unbeknownst to his wife, she has an entire hoard of kids that just can’t wait to count sweet, precious baby toes!!!

How NOT to cook 7 things

OK, back to me NOT being able to cook 😉  If you have spent any time around me at all, you will have discovered that I cannot cook.  We often kid around that I can only cook 7 things (and 2 of those are breakfast), so if you want something different from week to week, you’ll have to fend for yourself.  WELLLLL, apparently I cannot cook 7 things either… SIGH.  You see, I actually cooked “one of my breakfast things today” and we were discussing who cooked breakfast, at dinner.  I said I cooked breakfast and Courtney chimed in “Yeah but that wasn’t one of your things………. was it?!?!”  Jeff shushed her and now I can only cook 6 things 🙁

Ipod Generation

We have entered the era of the Ipod Generation:  “…do you understand the terms and conditions with which you can borrow this item from me?…”

Ampersands

You know, it’s this thing “&” Courtney, William and I were talking about grammar. I don’t know why?!? They have all their standardized tests this week and Courtney had an AP Language exam… I don’t think that is why we were talking about grammar, but the test did come up 😉

I said there are times when you must throw grammar out, just to make a point. William questioned that so I gave him an example that used to drive my mom crazy: me&Neil. You see that’s all one word. Courtney went on to explain that it had the “AND” sign not the word “and” to which I said Ampersand. “Oh good to know that’s what it’s called.”

She said she recently had to explain about ellipses and liked knowing that kind of trivia (I’m making you look that one up)!

$43,486.24

I’m sure many of you have heard of The Make-A-Wish Foundation. They have a program called Kids For Wish-Kids that allows high schools to host fundraisers to sponsor a child. Last year the girls’ high school shattered the previous national record of $25K by raising over $41K! That’s a tough one to top but they did!!!

I’ll let Courtney tell you about it:

Croup

CROUP: that childhood malady that plagues worrying parents in the middle of the night; even when said child is 19 and off at college 300 miles away! It’s always interesting to get a phone call from your child’s phone with someone else on the other end letting you know your child is on the way to the hospital!

Hope you are feeling better Heather.  [click here to see her version: http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/heather/2012/03/01/croup-a-hospital-adventure/

Green Eyes

I have learned that I probably shouldn’t take my girls out in public, 😉 at least not to Best Buy!  I took Ashley and Courtney to Best Buy and while we were there, they were admiring the tile flooring.  It is a bright blue with gold sparkles embedded within.  They were mesmerized by the floor and kept making comments like “…so… when we break into Best Buy, we have to remember to steal the floor!…”  A couple of male employees would glance at us, then look at the floor, then take a closer look at us.  I finally leaned over and said “You do realize we are in PUBLIC don’t you?!?!”  “Umm, yeah, sorry mom, but isn’t the floor great?!”

And to continue my public torture… as we were walking up to the checkout register, Ashley had mentioned that she would like to get colored contacts, green colored contacts.  This has been an ongoing discussion for a few months now, so Courtney picked up where we last left off… “MOM, you cannot encourage her to do this.”  and an argument ensued… “why… Why NOT? WHY?!  WHY NOT!?!?”  Ashley asked what’s wrong with green eyes and right before my eyes, I realize that Courtney is going to make a disparaging remark about green eyes and the young man behind the register has green eyes.  She is just out of “smack up side the head” range AND… “Because green eyes are dumb!”  The checker responds “Hey! I have green eyes, what’s wrong with green eyes?” at the same time, Ashley responds “… but YOU have green eyes!” It’s true… Courtney kinda has green eyes.  They are that kind of stormy gray color that changes with her mood and color of clothing… but today, they are green.

I just looked at the checker and said, “don’t mind her, she has green eyes and blonde hair!”

Ashley trained a cat

… actually, I think the cat has trained Ashley 😉  She has some “jangle-bells” dangling from her doorknob and every time she opens her door, the bells clang and the world knows she has opened her door.  When I asked her why she has these noisemakers on her door she explained that she put them there so she could train the cat to just jingle the bells when he wants out of her room.  AHHHH, so you mean the cat has trained you to jump up and open the door when you hear the bells jingle? 😉

Axcients

Yes that is a word!… YOU actually spell it “accents” but I pronounce it axcients [ax-see-ints].  🙂  When discussing my “axcient” I will have to throw grammar & spelling out…

You see, me&MyPhone were having a discussion.  I usually have a “quick code” text prepared to send to the kids before I leave on my way to pick them up from school.  Well, since I have a new phone, I haven’t mastered much of the stuff I’m used to doing without thinking.  SOOO, Jeff suggested I turn on SIRI on my new phone… SIRI being a voice controlled assistant.  Hence the me&MyPhone having a discussion.

I attempted to ask SIRI to “please text Courtney Scott that I am on my way.”  She replied with something that sounded remarkably like “I cannot find a Dorky White in your contacts. Will you please repeat your request?”  [This makes me question whether Courtney actually had a speech impediment as a small child or if she actually thought she heard me calling her Dorky?!?!?]

SOOOO, I’m trying to decide if I heard SIRI correctly [keep in mind that I am hard of hearing and now I suspect that SIRI is as well!!!] or if I should say WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!?!?

By this time, I am actually driving… since I can talk to my phone 😉 and I repeated my request with the exact same response.  SOOO, let’s change tactics… “Please text Courtney Scott I am at a nearby light.”  I cannot find a Dorky White, did you mean Courtney Scott?  If so, say yes.”  “Please repeat YES.”  “Ok, I will text Courtney Scott with this message…” says nothing… “If so, say yes.  Can you repeat yes?”

As I was pulling up to the school, Courtney finally received a text from me that just said “nearby.”

SOOOO…. not sure voice commands between us are going to continue?!?!?

Troubleshooting 101

This is a common statement in our house.  Basically, it means, if something isn’t working the first thing you should do, is to make sure it is plugged in. 🙂  Our kids learned this lesson as toddlers and have utilized it many times.

Today, “we” had a “troubleshooting 101” problem and it “almost” slipped by us.  Let’s just say, we had out the tools and flipped over the device looking for screw holes or something similar… when I realized “what’s this… OH… the panel that opens the door to the jammed paper!”

DUH!

Accidental snow day

The late night news said we’d get some flurries… no snow by midnight…. but by 4am it was obvious that we were getting a wee bit more than flurries as there was a blizzard outside and we easily had 6″… at 6:03am the school finally decided to have a “90 minute delayed start”… ah, that was SOOOO helpful because 90 minutes is plenty of time to figure out how to get out from under 10” of snow while it’s snowing.  THEN, a neighbor emailed that they had rolled their pickup truck a couple of blocks away…. AND THEN, another neighbor emailed that the high school bus had been stuck (on same road as rolled truck) for over an hour… AND THEN, another neighbor emailed that a snow plow was stuck in the driveway of a nearby elementary…. SOOOO, we kept the kids home.

As Murphy’s Law dictates, within another couple of hours, the sun was out, another snow plow had come through, and the roads were clear 😉

New Phone Woes

Courtney calls this a “First World” problem 😉  There was a very good reason why I have resisted getting a new PDA/phone… I was ENTRENCHED in the other one.  My life has effectively been turned upside down because all “my stuff” isn’t on my new phone.  And I don’t know how to use the stuff that is on the new phone… Geek or not, changing operating systems will confuse anyone!  SOOO, I realize that’s not an excuse for not updating the blog … and I do have “stuff” and pictures to blog about but… I’m still trying to figure out the new phone!  and Courtney made me get “Hanging w/friends & Words w/friends” 😉 tazscott99….
