Dragged Into Facebook

Ok, well, my sister Stacy and her friend Amy Stephenson have dragged me into Facebook.  I’m not sure how much I will use it because I have “this” that I have been updating for years! (since 1997)

NOTE UPDATE:  Now that FB is allowing userids, you can find me:  tazscott99

July 4th Weekend 2007

[pics incl] Yes, you read that right, it says 2007, but I’m publishing it 12/14/2016 because I was writing a post about journaling, referenced this particular weekend, found some photos from this weekend and THEN… found the “news of the week” that I sent my grandma about that weekend.  Made me laugh and cry all in one.  Laugh because so much of “us now” is in THIS weekend, much of “us now” stemmed from THIS camping trip and THIS week’s “news of the week.” and cry… well, 1) while i know I washn’t super diligant about my “news of the week” (blog) back then [it wasn’t as simple as it is now, wordpress didn’t exist, I did everything MANUALLY], I kept up with it and MAILED it to my grandmother in the nursing home so she could keep up with us AND so that those visitng her would have something to do.  and 2) because I know that I probably kept just a few notes, quickly typed this up letter up all at once and bam, it was out the door in minutes.  It took me hours to re-read it, and it’d dake me hours over days to try and write/tpe something like that now and i’d proably forget to keep notes on most of it!… sigh…

“News of the Week” letter I wrote my grandma 07/02/2007-07/06/2007

I included all the photos to my grandma as promised.  The captions on the photos are hysterical (and the truth!).

Ashley and William (notice he’s in red)

After the scramble of the “William fell in the lake” episode

Ashley, Courtney and William (notice he’s in orange now)

When we drove around and found the lake to have a picnic and ate lunch the kids climbed the rocks.  What’s not in this “news of the week” is what happened to Heather.   In true “Heather” fashion, she got STUCK, while climbing between the rocks.

Heather is STUCK!, her back pocket button is caught on a rock!

Of course, in my typical fashion, I took a picture before helping.  I’ve shown you this photo before, it goes with her other “Heather needs help” photos.

After lunch we left and found the river with the sand bars.  This was the FIRST time Ashley had seen this place.

wading across the river

THIS place she painted from memory several years later.

EEEWWWWH, my underwear got wet!

There are a few of things of “note” in tis letter:  we still camp at this location and that pop-up camper is the reason why we bought THIS pop-up camper, HA!  we’ve sinced learned our way around A LOT better.  THIS camping trip was the birth of EXTREME CARDS… HAHAHA!  this campsite (the actual camping spot was also the birth of Lemon Larvae and Extreme Croquet, this campsite is NOT the reason why I will not walk on grates but THIS trip solidified my reasoning for not holding onto doors with just my hands while stipping over things  [I sent a follow-up letter later with THE REST OF THE STORY of what happened with the door at the campsite]

THE REST OF THE STORY:  When I “slid” into the ditch, I realized what had happened and I started laughing.  I looked up and discovered that I was actually “under” the truck … off to the side, but my head was level with the tires/road, underneath of the truck, which was running of course and they couldn’t hear me, which just made me laugh harder.  I could hear them hollering but they couldn’t hear me.  Which made me think about the situation.  “Whoosh” she’s gone “What just happened? Where’d she go? Is there quicksand out there?” is what I imagined was going on inside the truck… I was NOT getting out of the ditch, the sand was loose and gravelly.  I had to walk AROUND to get out.  So yes, I was kinda hurt, but it was one of the funniest things ever and we still talk about that “disappearing act”…

NOT Opera

10/24/2006:  Be careful with your assumptions 😉  There was something that can only be described “as a terrible racket” coming from the basement stairs.  Out of habit, Jeff yelled at Ashley to settle down… but it turned out to be Courtney “SINGING OPERA?!?!?!?”  I think it was unanimous… she should NOT sing opera!   Courtney was OFFICIALLY OFFENDED! (not really 😉 but she said it anyway).

See HERE for more on “Officially Offended”

Pi is NOT Pie

09/15/2006:  This is what Courtney HEARD:  “And that’s why you need pie to exercise!”  PIE?!?!  WHERE’S THE PIE!?!?!?!?  I WANT PIE?!?!?!  Oh, her broken heart when she saw we were standing at the white board, having just proved that the exercise ball I use for my back needs PI to determine the size the ball needs to be in order to safely use it 😉  for example… it’s 65cm DIAMETER but we needed circumference… hence we needed PI in order to exercise.

Officially Offended

09/15/2006: I was trying to get a quote from a printer for directories… most were around $800ish but one lady (whom I was referred to from a neighbor and she knew it) quoted me $1250 and a deposit, would take over a week and was really snotty about it and kept saying she couldn’t keep competing with Office Depot… I told Jeff “I’m officially offended!!!!”  (if that’s how she treats referrals… he was with me so I had PROOF). He really wanted to know if there is a difference between being offended and OFFICIALLY OFFENDED 😉  We went to Office Depot… $400 and a few days later 😉  Thanks for the referral!

NOTE:  Courtney overheard me earlier in the day telling a friend about the “officially offended” story above….  We were discussing the fact that Courtney wanted us all to be pirates at Yogi’s for “Halloween weekend.”  After what seemed like hours of debate, I couldn’t stand it anymore and I said… “I think we should all be pirates… AND Courtney should be Tinkerbell!!!”  Very calmly… Courtney said “I’m OFFICIALLY OFFENDED!”

Ashley’s Letter from El Parral

[pics incl] This is where we first met Jaime.  I stumbled across this letter while cleaning out my desk and I wasn’t sure where to post it… so on the date on the letter seems appropriate.

Links to Recommended Reading Lists

I was so frustrated trying to find appropriate lists for my young teenagers (and myself) that were challenging YET, age appropriate.  I am compiling a list of links and plan to come back someday and compile a list of actual books!  PLEASE feel free to suggest any other links you have found useful!

NPR Books:  http://www.npr.org/books/

Arrowhead, WI library, college bound list:  http://als.lib.wi.us/Collegebound.html

Teachers First (you can get lost here, I put you on grade 8):  http://www.teachersfirst.com/readlist2-new.cfm?age=8

Reading.org Choices:  http://www.reading.org/Resources/Booklists.aspx

Kumon Recommendations (pre-readers thru high school):  http://www.kumon.com/miscellaneous/kumon_recommended_reading_list.pdf

Accelerated Reader:  http://www.arbookfind.com/
(There are pros/cons to AR, I get that, but it is an excellent resource to just “check” an age level of a book you’ve already found.  I had “little kids” ready to read at college level and not all material is appropriate!)

NEVER, EVER Delete Photos Directly from Your Camera

I took a lot of pictures this Thanksgiving that included people I rarely get to see, and people who rarely allow themselves to be in photos.  ONE of the photos came out very dark and blurry, so someone tried to delete this photo for me, from my digital camera.  They accidentally selected DELETE ALL.  While I had only taken 5 or 6 photos, those people were no longer at the gathering, I can NEVER recreate those memories.

TRUST ME… NEVER EVER… NEVER EVER… delete photos directly from your camera.  Always download them first (without removing/deleting), always confirm that the photos downloaded correctly AND THEN… AND ONLY THEN… you can delete from your camera/card to free up that space for more photos.

THEN, you can delete the photo you dislike from your downloaded photos.

However, I always say, EVERY PICTURE tells a story… even a bad picture… there might be a funny story attached to it… Like, right when you were taking the photo, the lightswitch was bumped and the lights turned off!  If you keep a journal, as I do, having that “bad photo” will help you remember.  And photos are about memories, not just taking good pictures.

[NOTE UPDATE:  03/21/2001… Some of the people I had photographed, have since, unexpected passed away… and I am only left with the memories “I should have had copies of…” so please learn from me… DO NOT DELETE PHOTOS FROM YOUR CAMERA!]
