Cabela’s greeter @ door: “what can I help you purchase today?”

Me: “a smoker, or a gun or hey… maybe… both”

Jeff just stood there

Me: [hands on hips, all huffy, ya’ll know … THE LOOK!!] “SERIOUSLY?! shouldn’t that get me… like… the  ‘best wife award’?!?”

Jeff: “Nope, for that, you’d need two guns.”

Date Night: Cooking School

[pics incl]  Jeff and I had a belated Valentine’s Day gift of a cooking school couples night.  Yes, that’d be him paying someone to let me cook πŸ˜‰

Right at the beginning, we had to sign a release, you know : knives, fire… “I’m not signing for her” and “I’m not allowed to hold knives…” preceded the, “Ah, thank you for declaring yourself upfront for us!” HA!  I hadn’t even made it in the door yet!

We made sure to take pictures BEFOREHAND… just in case

I didn’t have any of the shrimp (shellfish allergy) so Jeff had four instead of two.  Neither of us were sure about the fennel, but I have to say, once the sauces were added, this “salad” was delicious.

The veal and risotto was a two-parter so Jeff worked on the veal & sauces and I stirred the risotto.  At one point the guy next to me leaned over “I’ve been demoted to stirring.”  “Not me, this a promotion, I wasn’t kidding earlier when I said they don’t let me in the kitchen!”  [Note: there are 8 couples total and everyone, except one… the woman to his other side, had heard us kid around earlier about “our kitchen was on fire once, NO, I didn’t do it but they did ask if I was cooking“]  The woman to his other side had to be quickly brought up to speed on WHY everyone found “my promotion to stirring” extremely amusing ;-P

We actually made the dessert first, so that it would have time to chill while we cooked/ate the remainder of our meal.

We started w/ champagne and each of the dishes was paired w/ a wine they recommended.

Others that attended tonight, have been to “other” cooking class/dinners at other locations.  Based on THEIR opinions, “Kitchen Table” in GV is unanimously, worth the drive & the money.  While it was a bit pricey, it really wasn’t, considering, the high end food & wine, the time spent, we LOVE the head chef/instructor, and that I have ZERO complaints & highly recommend.

The best thing I learned is that I will no longer be “burning” anything.  It might be “over carmalized” or “intentionally rustic.” HA!

To be honest, I think this would be a blast if we had the entire group… say… our neighborhood, go together.  Can you imagine?!  Regardless, it was fun but I do think it would’ve been a bit “more fun” if we’d known at least one other couple.

Updates about Josh

So many of ya’ll have sent thoughts & prayers for William and his friend Josh & asked for updates.  Debbie posts here: http://team-josh.com/ as often as she is able.  https://www.gofundme.com/team-josh

This week William was pretty sick one day and had to stay home from school. We talked and he decided that a second day of rest would also allow him to spend some “daytime visiting” with Josh, as he’s been having some rough nights lately.  William was back/forth several times to give Josh some breaks. Will said he was glad he was able to visit now.

I’ve also visited a few times.  I hope he realizes how much I’ve missed him stopping by and distracting me πŸ˜‰  Bless his heart, the other day, he was more concerned about MY head than his?!  I try to stop by at least, every other day or so if I can, he’s been w/ nurses or often asleep, so i will sometimes just get an update from grandma (staying from NZ).

As of this posting, he has not really held anything (he said not even water) down in… I think 9-10 days or so.  Bless his sweet heart, he’s still fairly good spirits when i visited.  But William wanted to spend some daytime with him before he became unable to do so.

It’s difficult for me to post some of the antics going on in our house, knowing the heartache happening two doors down.  The nerf guns last night also brought up sweet memories of Dalton.  Hopefully, I continue to LOVE these boys by sharing stories that include them.  Sometimes that will mean I will do it through the tears of a mother’s eyes, my kids might think i just laughed so hard i p’d a little… it might be a bit of both.

[NOTE UPDATE: I visited a while w/ Josh on 03/06/17 & found him resting on the couch.  He still has not held anything down, I think it’s been about 12-13 days.

Josh was AGAIN more concerned about MY head.  Had them turn the TV down because he said I can’t have it too loud.  and he was asking how I felt because it was flurries but extremely windy and cold.

As if tumor growth & not eating weren’t enough, I know he’s feeling the “low pressure” too because he’s told me before that the weather also bothers him, but he’s … worried about me.

His hair is growing in, now it’s longer fuzzy.  He said I didn’t need to massage his head today [we were playing w/ his hair & massaging recently] because the nurse/masseuse just left.  [actually, he tried to get ME to book an appointment w/ her.  this was one of those moments where I wasn’t sure if I misunderstood because “well, MY brain confuses ME”, OR if he had pulled off one of his quippy jokes that he’s actually pretty good at…, OR if this was in fact one of those moments of confusion that he’s been having.  Since he said “nurse gave him massage” but I should “book his masseuse” [maaa-sooosss, w/ that hint of NZ accent]  This could go any which way.  And all the “adults” had stepped out of the room.  I opted for quippy.]

Rescuing THE Bear

[pics incl]  Ya’ll have heard about Teddy THE Bear over the years [http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2013/09/23/a-girls-best-friend/] so you can imagine that even kidding around about giving a fake mustache to Teddy, did NOT go over well.

It all started when Jeff left town and Shelbi & Sadie were visiting [http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2017/02/28/sadie-visiting-022817/] when a snowstorm made us decide that “maybe you shouldn’t be driving in that…” Courtney and I had this brilliant idea to “give Shelbi the night off” by taking care of Sadie overnight.  We can discuss later, whether this really was a brilliant idea.  πŸ˜‰ Courtney, Sadie & I were all in my room (Shelbi was 2 floors away in the basement)… HENCE… Teddy was on my bed when Jeff returned home.

He didn’t even take the cap off the marker when he pretended to threaten the bear in a txt to the entire family.

Blood loyalty rallied and next thing we knew there was giggling and stomping and our bedroom door flung open wide to the sight of WARRIORS… armed with nothing less than the only things you can rescue a Teddy Bear hostage…

…Nerf guns!  [You know we have a house full of nerf guns … right ;-P http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2015/10/12/nerf-wars-will-josh-and-dalton/ ]

[NOTE:  of course: they were all giggling & laughing & busy “rescuing ” the bear that the candid pictures were blurry & didn’t come out so I insisted they get back up here & “re-stage” for my blog ;-P w/ the hall light ON cuz it wasn’t originally on]

They sent us this after their successful “hostage extraction”

News of Note: Ashley is a Junior

By the way, Ashley is a college junior.  Remember all those AP tests she took: http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2015/05/22/ashleys-senior-honors-graduation-ceremony-052115/  between those high school AP tests and her crazy college scholastics… She’s a junior, majoring in something along the lines of biology but because she was clearly bored, she took some higher level mathematics and we keep telling her she should throw an “engineering” onto the end of that (she’s already taken MOST of the courses anyway).. and just for the heck of it, she’s also taking Chinese.

So… I actually have no idea what is her major. ;-P

You should see some of the fabulous artwork she still does.  I’m not allowed to post due to possible “copyright” issues if she ever wants to submit it anywhere.  But I promise… I’m not over-exaggerating, even her doodles are crazy impressive!  We all have “stuff” of hers on our phones, if you’re ever around, ask to see her work, in person!

We did get her a big fancy easel for her birthday, some assembly required, cat not included.

I sneaked this one anyway πŸ˜‰ Look close, Ashley sketches her designs in silver sharpie on the canvas first and Peanut is giving her advice on how to use that measuring tape.

News of Note: Courtney Graduates College in May

Courtney has managed to finish her major & minor in four years, while working two jobs.  She’s clearly insane.

If I understand what is supposed to happen πŸ˜‰ she actually needs a mini class in May as well (it’s literally like 3 weeks or something) called a May-mester.

I *think* they assume she will pass this class so she “graduates” in May, with her degree in International Business and minor in Chinese.

Because she will be in this class full time, she will no longer be working at Magic Rabbit… awh, she’s “graduating” from MRCW in April.

So I Got a B

Ashley & I were by the car in the parking lot after PT when she abruptly stated “I give this a B.”  I had no idea what “we” were talking about and at first I was thinking “BEE” and about argued “it’s way too cold for bees!”

She proceeded to EXPLAIN to me why MY PARKING only rated me a “B.”   As I am “What are you talking about?” “Well, you aren’t centered in your space, see, here.  Don’t worry, Courtney regularly gets a D+”  I was explaining to her the nuances of parking with a light pole IN YOUR SPACE… At the exact same moment I hear behind me, something along the lines of “that’s awesome!”

Now THIS GUY wants to be graded too πŸ˜‰  Turns out, he’s a doctor w/ the hospital and was amused at her antics

I politely joked “Yeah, well, I’m not taking any crap … from … my… now… T-W-E-N-T-Y year old, that doesn’t have her license! Ha!”

Neuro-Psych Results 02/21/17

We met with neuro-psych today and received the results from my testing that I did in January [ http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2017/01/30/c-bananas-w-chopsticks/ ]  Basically, I failed several of the tests, on the left side of my brain.

To be honest, this is actually a relief to hear, it upsets me, but it’s information.  I wish they had done this IN THE BEGINNING!?  [rant over]  This is a baseline of where I am now.  It’s many pages of info, some of it is “background,” etc, and notes, I’m not publishing it.

Here are some highlights:

  • Diagnosis words she used:  Aphasia [language skills loss, i think she threw spelling into this category πŸ˜‰ ], … lots of words to describe the brain clot, lots of word to describe the “migraine” and w/ & without migraine and my personal favorite… IRRITABILITY
  • Things she noticed:  I like to talk πŸ˜‰
  • It appears that the items that I did poorly were reading, colors, numbers,  remembering longterm, remembering LOTS of things at once, and doing anything fast, and a few other visual items.  Most of the stuff is all “left brain” related.
  • I did ok on a few things.  She noted that I said I had done some before which indicates that my long term memory is intact.  What’s weird is that I tested “left hand dominant” on several of the skills.  I’ve told ya’ll I’m ambidextrous, only write w/ my right hand but I’ve been slower about everything since clot.  However, she had to test how fast i did some things with my fingers and my left hand was faster???
  • Recommendations:
  • I could benefit from COGNITIVE REHABILITATION.  we asked what this meant, it’s a bit more than just speech therapy because it will take itno account “where i was before” not just whre is the average person.  I don’t know how to dexcribe this without sounding arrogant but here goes.  The “average” bar is about 6.5 and in my opionin, right now, I am testing at 6.4-6.6.  Well, I wasn’t qualify for “thereapy” because I am above average and therefore did not need therapy.  But in my opinion, MY BAR used to be 8.5-9.  Based on her testing, this puts me into cognitive rehab, because it takes WHERE I WAS into account and tries to help me get back to that point.  Even a little bit can offer some benefits.  Cognitive Rehab encompasses, speech, spelling, reading, mental exercises, tips on how to use “other” pathways, etc.  [She didn’t use #’s as I did, she held out her arms as “my bars” but that’s too hard to explain in a blog πŸ˜‰ ]
  • She wrote a list of recommedations for doctors to take when they meet w/ me:  ie. WRITE THINGS DOWN, get me to repeat it back to you to see if I understand it the way you think you said it, verify that I have someone with me “that can translate” for both of us [this list of recommendations was for me to follow for my docs as well]
  • I will need assistance w/ complex tasks.  She wrote stuff like:  paying bills, sorting meds, writing a list of today’s chores.  [Jeff pays the bills now :-(, I’ve always been pretty good about the meds & have a sorter, and we all share calendars on our phones, hence the iPhone controversy you might here me rant about but THAT is why I have an iPhone… so I can be supervised in my tasks]
  • I might be able to remember info better if I try to “store it” w/ a picture rather than w/ words.  If his name is Bob, think of something bobbing up down in the water. [She was saying this and all I could think was: “Hello, my name is Joe…”]
  • Benefit from listening to Mindfulness Meditation for Pain Relief w/ guided exercises for managing pain
  • Reducing medications, specifically topiramate.  [Topimax]
  • daily exercise, other techniques to improve sleep and help with general health
  • We asked about going back to work: No.  At least not until 1) meds resolved then 2) after cognitive rehab neuro doc feels I can do so.  I can always go back to neuro-psych to re-evaluate where I am again and see what I CAN do.
  • On a complete side note… I have a follow up neuro vascular who is gonna be my primary [http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2017/02/14/neuro-vascular-021417/.  My head has been bothering me for a few days and no, haven’t had chance to get the “other new med” cuz insurance is being a pain about it.  So, while I’ve had this opportunity to revisit my “oh my aching head” for the past several days and again last night and I took all these med and “what’s the point of taking all thse meds, if I’m just gonna be up anyway” Im thinking of suggestion to just NOT… NOT be taking all these meds?  So I have no Thyroid… need that one.  Have a brain clot… need that one.  Have the funky thing going on w/ my left arm getting cold and “this new med” MIGHT work if I ever get to take it… so MIGHT want that one….. SO WHAT WOULD BE THE HARM IN NOT… NOT TAKING ANY OF THE OTHERS!?!?!  My head hurting?  cuz i’m taking them and my head hurts, so if you say my head will hurt if I don’t take them…. ok….

I feel poisoned… let’s reboot.  THIS neuro-psych is NOT a prescribing doc but when I said these words to her today…. her eyes said YOU SHOULD DO THAT.  See that bullet item on her list “reduce medications”….. I think neuro-vascular will be open to this suggestion.  Former neuro lady doc did not like this idea…. but I’m sick of the drugs, I’m thinking, if I’m gonna be in pain anyway… why am I taking the drugs?

    Spellcheck Snafu

I’m sure you’ve all had them (or heard about them), the spellcheck that changed a word in a sentence, that actually changed the meaning or intent of your original word.  This can be confusing when it does something with positive and negative like [is vs. isn’t] but what do you do when it take a real word and replaces it w/ another real word?  Or takes YOUR “proper noun” and replaces it w/ a stupid real word that just “doesn’t quite fit”… enjoy

Now, Ashley had no idea that her spellcheck had “started this” She just thought we were… well… being normal… and she was amused and bantered back.  BUT WE HAD NO IDEA what she originally intended to to tell us.  It was many painful hours later before Courtney was sitting here in the living room while we were discussing “Tues plans” and told us the story from her point of view, she had asked Ashley earlier in the day, “did you ever clarify for them about morning?” but Ashley had taken that as “morning vs noon” not “morning vs Monina” and since Ashley had txt NOON (see above), she told Courtney yes.  but… No… she hadn’t “clarified morning vs Monina”, we were still clueless!

So folks, MONINA, will be stopping by at noon and we do not control the sunrise ;-P

    Girls’ Scout Cookie Caper

[pics incl]  Shelbi and Sadie came to visit.  Jeff and Sadie got along fabulously.

after she took a nap, William walked in here, and she hadn’t seen him yet, he thought he’d just say “hi” and be on his way.  He hasn’t seen her in a while… she sqwacked, popped up in my lap and stood there… and I PROMISE… if she knew how to tap her foot to say “I’m waiting…!”  He had his hands full “…but… yeah, OK” [drops everything]

But THEN… we sent Ashley and Shelbi out, and that left “us” in charge of Sadie.  Courtney had girl scout cookies… and Sadie can crawl.  No, we didn’t give her lemon savannah cookies… I went and got her a plain sugar cookie ;-P

Sadie was totally copying EVERYTHING Courtney was doing and it was hysterically funny and extremely cute.

We dunno if she’s allowed to have cookies… ssshhhhh. ;-P

But then Courtney’s other kids were jealous but properly waited until Sadie was sleeping before sniffing around her.

    Ode to the Back Door

[pics incl]  There were teenage boys practicing with the “throwing knives”   Our instructions were “do one stupid thing and you have to put those away.”

I hear ya, but these are responsible boys.  They had the plywood setup as the backstop.  Jeff checked their setup, they were good.

It was the wind… that didn’t play nice.

They put the knives away πŸ˜‰

You see the blame can’t be ALL his.  It all started when Santa brought the knives πŸ˜‰ let’s say YES, some lessons were learned, some freaking out occurred… some laughing happened. Not our first broken window, not even our first “broken thing” this weekend. We pointed to the mailbox… http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2017/02/18/ode-to-the-mailbox/

No money exchanged hands, we take ours in sweat πŸ˜‰ A memorial for the backdoor will be held at a later date when the “guilty party (s)” will return to assist in clean up & replacement… This window was already on slated for “the list” to… ahem… retire. πŸ˜‰

And he graciously posed for a “photo of shame” that  the other boys swear to make viral.  I only promise to harass… today πŸ˜‰

dear backdoor, what can I say, this won’t be as elegant… we didn’t like you a much and I suppose it’s always shown.  the end…

[Shelbi arrived mere moments of this happening… “Do you realize your mailbox has been rundown?! OhMiGosh… what… happened… here?!? OhMiGosh

When the girls got home from work, they both paused and kinda tilted their heads at same time “was this? what? when? what happened?”

Jeff: “The glass shattered when you hit the mailbox.”

    Ashley: “OhMyGosh!? Are you Serious?!?”

Courtney :”it did NOT, THAT is NOT a THING and you are such a LIAR! Ashley, don’t believe him, this better be a REALLY GOOD STORY or I’m gonna be mad that you tried to pin it on me!” [NOTE TO FUTURE PROSPECTS: she’s sick, she’s hungry, & she found out at the last minute she has an online MATH/FINANCE exam later today… there will be NO tolerating BS πŸ™‚   Does this sound like anyone? HA!]

They were properly amused. They blame Santa.]

Ooooh, but it’s really pretty in the morning sun!

Abby showed up the next day: What happened? Guess.  Well, it’s broken outside.  And right here. [while she didn’t guess “throwing knives” because well… yeah… she had excellent guesses] She immediately narrowed it down to… boys whom shall not be named.  “But they wouldn’t have thrown at the door on purpose? so what happened?” [see above]  She too, knows all the boys, is properly amused, and only partially blames Santa πŸ˜‰  She was MORE AMUSED by & will be attending the mailbox memorial.
