Some Posts Accidentally Deleted

Somewhere between updating my iOS, my WordPress App on my phone and getting a new phone a couple months ago…. MANY posts have been inadvertently deleted. It seems that they all decided that, even though something has successfully been posted to my blog, IF any updates were made and had “local changes saved” [ie. I made an update while not connected to Internet, this was saved to my phone, then I later posted those changes to my blog]…. it REMOVED the entire post, not the duplicate local saved file. Well for the past couple of years I’ve been traveling around (yes, during Covid 😉😷) and many places did not have T-mobile… Therefore, a great many of my posts…. had changes made while my Wi-Fi/Cellular were switched off.

GRRRRRR…..

For “most” of them, I have the… let’s call it a draft… randomly. I at least have PHOTOS

I’ll work on restoring those after I finish with our British Virgin Islands trip.

However, ONE HUGE DATA POINT HERE…. I may reference something or someone that has been deleted. If you feel lost… PLEASE lemme know and I’ll jump on that one ASAP.

And… I already know of several missing posts that include photos of William & Emily, so I will put those at the top.

I’d really appreciate that, if you know of others, please, let me know!

Our Definitions of Cloud

Leaving the Virgin islands 01/29-30/22

[pics incl] As we were docking we passed several boats that were painted black and pink and had variations of pirate pig logos on them. I had seen a few as w we were leaving last weekend and said “I need a pirate pig boat… or my dad does!” (andI had to explain why… 😉) So I was ready to snap a couple photos as we returned. No one I asked knew anything about them but there were several of all shapes, styles & sizes.

I took a picture of the sailing certificate and we all exchanged phone numbers & created a group chat to keep in touch!

As we were headed ashore for dinner, a nearby boat had their bottom lights on and had attracted some tarpin.

He was at it during dinner putting mayo on everything… including his pizza. Since I sat next to him you get to share my experience😉

After dinner, the crew were excited to teach us some of their games. During Scabby Queen… we (the Americans) realized… it’s Old Maid.

We left the boat by 8 am and went to breakfast… joined by… the chickens, of course.

The ferry ride back to St. Thomas was completely full. Our shipmates had been told different things regarding their ferry ticket purchase and ended up on standby… but they had flights to catch. We weren’t sure how to help. Fortunately, they were the last 3 passengers allowed on standby so all was well. Jeff and I couldn’t get flights until the following morning so we stayed at Bluebeard’s.

Unfortunately, this area was still closed to tours during restoration & repairs from the hurricanes.

Jeff had a creamsicle and said it really does taste litter the popsicle… I don’t like the popsicles so I didn’t try it 😉

We arrived home and it was COLD and snowy… so I txt our group from the boat “miss ya’ll ”

After everyone cringed at the sight of our snow & traffic… a couple days later, I sent them better snow pix.

That concludes the trip we took to BVI in January 2022. Thanks for sharing your own experiences with me! I’ve enjoyed hearing about how things have stayed the same or have changed because of the hurricanes. Jeff and I plan to goto Antigua in late April… holler if you have any advice or suggestions!

Snorkeling in Little Harbor, BVI 01/28/22

[pics incl] We spent 01/28/22 snorkeling in Little Harbor, BVI. There is plenty to do in the area and we all had decent cellular service here, giving us all the opportunity to take our “proctored at home Covid tests” so we can catch the ferry tomorrow. If one of the group tested positive, we would have all been quarantined for 10 days…. shucks 😉

After learning to squeeze all the air out of the waterproof bag, I actually got some decent videos. I learned that i had to prevent my phone from auto lock and use the buttons vs tapping the screen but otherwise I was able to mostly capture what I wanted. Often a wave or underwater current would throw me and cause the video too abruptly” swerve ” but hey… that’s what happened and the viewer gets to experience it too!😂 Often, I have to pause the video and show it in slow motion so the viewer can watch the intended target…. some things moved slow, others in the blink of an eye.

I was told this is a sea cucumber.

There is an eel under this rock but it’s moving too fast to point out so… here’s a photo of an interesting rock.

The octopus is moving FAST. I have a couple videos but the waves kept tossing me and I had to swim away from the large spiny urchin (or prevent others from hitting it). Here’s a shot of the octopus with no edits.

These next few are zoomed in on the video and I have slowly moved video forward to show the octopus movement… the entire video is only 20-25 seconds. I am swimming toward the octopus which is bolting from the right, down to the rocks in the center or left center of the screen. It’s only 1-2′ long and squished down into a pile of goo with the eye showing at the top.

This is the same as the first photo, I’ve marked the octopus & eye for you.

We turned and found ourselves looking at several bright blue fish. When I realized that Jeff was motioning that he intended to follow a large one, I snapped a photo of a smaller version.

A member of our group snapped a live photo of Jeff and me snorkeling near the boat. I am far left center edge and Jeff is near the center to the lower left of the boat.

Jeff wanted to go kayak and as I was returning to the boat, a school of fish passed beneath the ladder. only one came up close to me. Sometimes trying to video and swim made me a little dizzy so I opted not to attempt the kayak.

While we were waiting on our tests results, we played a quick game.

He kept putting mayonnaise on EVERYTHING… including taco salad. Yup, even last week, we’d goto restaurants and there would be ketchup, mustard & mayo sitting out on all the tables.

Unfortunately, we all tested negative and we had to return to the dock for our last night.

As we were leaving, someone pointed out a yacht they said was owned by Blackberry (ie as in the blackberry phones).

I think I have one last day or two of photos left.

enjoy!

BVI 01/27/22

[pics incl] We spent a good part of 01/27/22 sailing and snorkeling. The sunrise and sunset were gorgeous again.

Jeff enjoyed being in the captains chair again!

I took my phone with me snorkeling but learned a lesson… you have to make sure ALL THE AIR is out of the bag or it causes distortions. I followed some giant (and baby) sea turtles for a good while but all of the photos & videos are blurry. They were about 35′ down and I had even figured out how to dive down a few feet… sigh. Here’s one of the “better” blurry ones where you can at least tell its a turtle.

we stopped for the evening and had a late snack on the flybridge.

… and watched the gorgeous sunset!

Dinner tonight included zucchini soup and we all laughed when someone pointed out that the roasted garlic cloves looked like the barnacle that injured her elbow!

enjoy!

The Bubbly Pool, BVI 01/26/22

[pics incl] After all the swimming today, I needed to rest my head/neck, so I did not go ashore to The Bubbly Pool. Jeff took photos for me. He uses the “live” setting which is like a one second video. I haven’t decided if I like this setting or not. It’s great if you are showing photos in person and can explain😉, otherwise, it’s just a still photo. It is super easy to get a still photo from a live one so that may be something I start doing?

Soon there 😉

When the waves crash against the outer rocks… a burst of water shoots thru and soaks everyone.

Thanks for taking photos for us!

Afterwards, Jeff was in the captain’s chair for a while…. his happy place.

I brought him a cold drink and the captain appeared and handed him a beer, said “Now you’re double parked!” and walked off.

Tonight’s sunset was AMAZING!

We stopped for the night.

Dinner included this french onion soup and chocolate pie.

Later, the guys put a light out in the water to see if they could attract anything. I think they had fun not catching anything😉

enjoy!

The Desert Island 01/26/22

[pics incl] We stayed in the cove that we had eaten dinner ashore and anchored overnight.

We went nearby to a small island and took the dingy ashore for photos. I do have video of almost everything I’m posting still photos but the videos take up a lot of bandwidth. It’s taking me a while to go thru and add dates and take screenshots/still off the videos. In some cases, i have to watch the video a couple times myself to figure out what I was doing😉 I know I was wiped out most days after snorkeling but I’m thinking I should have tried to at least date the pics and quick captions. Lessons learned. I was also learning how to use my iphone under water at the same time… took me a couple of days to figure it out. Everyone says I need a GoPro….

The saying in the BVI is “you can’t drink all day, if you don’t start in the morning.” I did NOT!

While we were in this area… Ashley txt’d

No words were needed for either of us 😂

saw this shell while snorkeling.

then turned around into this school of fish.

Jeff swam past this fish. i’m calling it a “rock fish” but they told me a different name that I promptly forgot.

This is actually the second one I saw. THIS… is what made me realize the first day of snorkeling, that Jeff couldn’t see everything underwater that I could see because he cannot wear his glasses with the snorkel. I decided to try taking my phone with me but I’m a beginner at snorkeling and at underwater photography. I tried keeping my video’s about 30 seconds so they wouldn’t be massive. Sometimes waves would drag me away from my intended subject matter! We are discussing going to Antigua in late April. Hopefully before we go again, Jeff can order prescription goggles and maybe I can get ya’ll’s advice on whether to get GoPro 😉 or if there is something else I should consider??? Bring on the suggestions!

This afternoon we plan to go over to a place called The bubbly pool.

enjoy!

[stay tuned! I’m still working on photos. Our trip lasted thru 01/30/22 and as of this post I’m halfway thru 01/26/22]

Robert Burnes Day 2022 in BVI

[pics incl]. Our captain is Scottish and they celebrate author Robert Burnes Day (01/25/22) by eating haggis and whiskey and reading Burnes poems.

He told us that we needed a wee dram of whiskey with our haggis. We spent a good part of our trip trying to understand English. The captain is Scottish, first mate is British and another crew is from South Africa. They each somewhat understood each other’s “slang” but it greatly varied from “American.” It would take a few minutes to convert something said to “the other English.” Even the can of haggis says”wee dram!” We took that to mean “a shot.”

The one that “got us” all and took us a while to translate was when I asked what we should wear when going out to dinner ashore. The answer was “Your glad rags.” None of us knew what they meant. Please convert that to American. How do you say glad rags in American? I dunno, that’s why I’m telling you to do it. “I hear the words and they are in English, but you aren’t making any sense.” Glad rags = dress up to go out (ie… don’t wear a swimsuit).

The guys ordered lobster. This is local BVI lobster… it’s HUGE!

On our way back to the boat, they had to explain that “no naked light” means “no open flame” (this was posted near a propane tank)

While we were at dinner, one of the crew left on vacation and the other two, cleaned our rooms with fresh linens and remade the beds. They even decorated for Robert Burnes night.

I offered to download Burnes poetry from my library app so the captain could read poetry… haha that didn’t happen.

I don’t remember the story behind the Frangelico but it was part of the celebration.

Snorkeling in BVI 01/25/22

[pics incl] After our visit to The Baths, we visited other coves for snorkeling and moored for the night in Long Bay. I have to say that I’m LOVING snorkeling 😁

Sunset in Long Bay.

We brought some card games with us. After Uno, Jeff taught the group “The Mind.”. It’s a cooperative game where you try to play cards in order from 1-100 without talking. You can only raise your hand to help the group focus. I went to go rest my head after all the swimming/snorkeling and when I got up… “the group” had turned this card game into a drinking game?! Like that’ll help with focus😂

Again, I was up for the gorgeous sunrise! Jeff was up for the coffee 😉

At one point I was lying on the trampoline looking up the mast at the moon. It was actually harder than it sounds to get a photo of the moon, while on a rocking boat, with a flapping sail…. and not throw up!

I drew a circle around it (duplicate photo).

I told him that somewhere in my kitchen I have a similar sign…

I was out snorkeling and they pulled up next to me in the dingy “you wanna go find a shark?!”. Jeff had gone back to the boat and I had no idea he was taking photos. I attempted to get in the dingy unassisted…. that’s as far as I got before my left arm gave out. I might have been able to if I hadn’t already been snorkeling. After they hauled me in, we were off…. to find a shark!

Nope. I never saw a shark. But I had a blast “not finding” it.

The food has been FABULOUS!

Still have a few more days of photos to sort thru…

Enjoy!

The Baths, Virgin Gorda, BVI 01/24/22

[pics incl] To get to The Baths, you have to anchor and take a dingy to where they have it roped off, then swim to shore. To beat the crowds, we did all this, shortly after sunrise. [NOTE: I have no idea if I’m spelling some of these places correctly, if you know otherwise, holler].

At this point in the trip, I had not thought to put my phone in a waterproof bag & swim. All these photos were taken on one of our group member’s phone.

What’s wrong with this picture? As I’m swimming too shore, my watch lit up. YUP, forgot to take that off! I learned that my watch has an “expel water” feature 😂.

The moon seen over The Baths, Virgin Gorda, BVI 01/24/22

The tide is pouring in from the right.

The photos don’t do this scene justice. As the sun came up the water changed colors and the colors were brilliant!

As we were leaving, we passed by this shack and I told them I needed a photo of something called “on the rock”… and I’ll explain later.

This is On The Rock Beach Tique.

During the swim back to the dingy, one of the girls barely brushed her elbow against the swim bouy. It turns out, it had barnacles on it and her arm immediately swelled up and looked like a bite & rash. She had to soak her elbow in vinegar a few times a day for a few days. Up until this point I hadn’t decided whether or not I preferred swimming in the long sleeve shirt I have on. Now I know it’s called “rash guard” for a reason!

enjoy!

Sunset in Valley Trunk Bay BVI 01/23/22

[pics incl] We anchored for the night 01/23/22 in Valley Trunk Bay because it’s near The Baths (sp?) on Virgin Gorda that we planned to visit in the morning.

While we were taking these sunset photos a nearby Club Med yacht started raising the sails.

On the 01/24/22 I was up early taking sunrise photos 😉 During breakfast, we motored over to The Baths at Virgin Gorda.

There was a storm in the distance that produced a double rainbow.

enjoy!

Our First Night on the Catamaran 01/22/22

[pics incl] After we left Sugar Mill on 01/22/22, we hung out in the harbor and bought our snorkeling gear. [Due to covid, they weren’t allowing anyone to share gear.]. We all mer at a beach restaurant before heading to the catamaran in the evening.

We spent the evening getting settled into our rooms and meeting the other guests while they moved us to a nearby cove for the night.

We realized later that we didn’t get any pictures of the rooms. We had an issue with our room the first night because the corner of the bed was wet. The sliding window above the bed has not been sealed completely when they pressure washed the boat. Fortunately for us, there was another empty room, so we just slept in that room the first night.

View of the shoreline from the boat.

One of the other boats in our group lit up blue overnight. I’ll have to get Jeff to help me identify WHERE we are located.

I was up early taking sunrise pics.

Our chef made cute little fruit designs.

We put on suits to go snorkeling… but first, they fixed piña coladas. I was attempting to see what the front trampoline was like during that time so Jeff thought it’d be cute if I attempted to hold my drink, in a dress thing that goes over swimsuits… while trying to stand on a mesh thing… on a moving boat. [By this time, I’d already found & put on one of those ear patch things to prevent sea sickness.]. I could not stand & hold a drink. I popped down really last like and pretended I could sit and hold it 😉

We actually had OK cell service so we txtd the kids a lot. Jeff also felt compelled to txt Sheri/Jody cuz he really wants a boat. They just sold theirs. This trip is really about seeing HOW I will do on a boat for extended time. I’m a teensy green but so far… OK. … Yah… he’s looking at boat listings already 😂

We are stopping here for the evening.

More to come… enjoy!

Finishing Our Stay at Sugar Mill

[pics incl] You want to visit Sugar Mill. I haven’t edited the photos, (except for dates), what you see is here. Our stay was phenomenal, the people, the places, the food, the vibrant colors, the sounds.

Sugar Mill is nestled away from it all and not your Margaritaville type experience. They can connect you though😉

We learned a lot about “Island time” and why they use that phrase. The temperature varies only about 7 degrees. Even “I” got in the water… in January! (Yup it was a bit chilly at first). Chickens. From Jeff’s perspective, seafood, glorious seafood. This week an underwater volcano erupted on the other side of the world, so that’s been in the news too.

Sugar Mill has the main dining and the cafe on the beach. Breakfast/lunch were in the cafe.

I finally had a Pelican pose during breakfast!

We decided to rent a car a head back to one of the beaches we visited the other day. A chanting we will go… “stay left!”

This is the pool & view of some of the upper villas. There are a few more… up higher on the hillside.

We ate lunch at a food truck in town. We wanted to stop by a grocery store for a few items before our boating adventure next week. You usually cannot go wrong eating at a food truck that has local police waiting to eat! That was a good call! We also visited another beach and watched a few people learning to surf before heading back for dinner.

We did not take the car out again because it had a flat. The car was pretty beat up when we got it (probably not a bad thing…. haha… STAY LEFT!!). We noticed that everyone drive on the left but most of the cars had the steering wheel on the left (like in US) but there were also cars with it on the right. I didn’t even try… Jeff just keep telling me to remind him to stay left…. and we’d turn a corner and I’d forget hahaha.

I don’t know why we didn’t think to take pictures of the various salads & appetizers. Jeff is trying something like lobster bisque maybe? I did not. However, I finally coaxed Millie away from one of the other guests. She’s been hanging out with him at the pool helping him sleep they listening to his audio book.

One night in the way down to dinner, my pocket got snagged on a stick… that turned out to be a garden snake 😉. I did not play with the snake. There’s definitely a lot of life and. Birds and tree frogs hang out OUTSIDE the screen to the bathroom & shower , but the little chameleon.. hung out in the shower. The next morning I was “not touching” baby chicks near this flower.

It’s hard to see in the photos but some mornings the water would be off the beach and the waves would not be white capping. One day was kinda rough out there. This particular view is literally towards the Atlantic and from up on our balcony you can actually see the shelf and dramatic change in color of the water.

Our last evening. I tried to capture the sunset while we were waiting for dinner.

I actually ate salad & local veggies more than anything else. Jeff tried lobster every style they served! We had separate apartments…. just kidding 😂

Our final morning. They serve brunch on the weekends. We tried to make sir we took some good quality pictures of some of the things I’ve mentioned. At breakfast, we visited with the other two couples that had accompanied us on the catamaran excursion earlier in the week.

We had our same cheery driver to take us to the next part of our stay…. this week will be on a catamaran all week…. wish me luck.

Hopefully that’s all the photos from our stay on Tortola. If I find stray pics, I’ll sneak them in somewhere for ya.

Enjoy.

Sugar Mill Island Tour 01/19/22

[pics incl] Our stay at Sugar Mill included two excursions. One was a catamaran day on 01/17/22 and the other a tour of the island by the resort manager (born & raised on Tortola). I’ve thrown in some random foodie pix too.

First, I should explain that way back when Jeff made the catamaran reservations for next week, almost a year ago, BVI required that all visitors quarantine for five days at “approved facilities.” Well leave it to Jeff to go…. well I don’t wanna staying in a hotel for 5 days, I wonder…? And if I’m starting 5.. then why not a week? Yes, Sugar Mill is an approved site because it’s an out of the way, secluded, smaller facility where everything is SPACED OUT. By the time we arrived, no quarantine was necessary so… voila, more vacation!

We had mentioned to a few people over the months that we were PLANNING on going but no one but the kids knew when we left (as we weren’t sure we would get to go).

We are in the gazebo at the main dining hall. That building you see (left center) it’s where our room is on lower level, facing the ocean across the street. The zoom out view shows the roof of the breakfast/lunch cafe that’s across street on the beach.

We went on a catamaran with about 20 other people plus 2 crew. To the best of my knowledge, I’d never been snorkeling before and I really enjoyed it. Neither of us took many photos because there were a lot of people and we knew we’d be visiting some of these same places next week. I can’t remember this one (we bought a map later so we could start keeping track). We went to Treasure Island (it inspired the book).

Tortola is known for its piña colada & similar drinks. The famous “Pain Killer” invented at The Soggy Dollar is basically a piña colada w/ out ice & blending. Ice melts in 2.33 seconds. It didn’t matter how much ice you have 😂 We are supposed to be going to The Soggy Dollar next week.

There’s one person out on the beach😁 Another couple joined us for the tour drive around the island.

Yeah… he owns that island. We helped him buy it. Haha

Much of the island still suffers from the devastating effects of the two back to back hurricanes. This bay is full of unclaimed sunken ships.

We continued our drive to other beaches, I got out & played in the water some.

Then he took us to a beach called Lava Flow… I cannot over exaggerate the narrowness of the road, the steepness of the road, the invisibility of the road, the awful shape of the road…. and the driving on the wrong side of the road!!!!

Yup… this is it. This path is smoother, wider and flatter than the road to get here. … wait for it …

Almost there… put on some ocean wave sounds…. and… just… listen….

This is where they made that recording 😉

Jeff went exploring over there but then we had to leave… UP THAT…. same road.

But then we stopped for lunch on this beach for couple of hours. The five of us… well six if you count this one… then she went and got all her chicks!

We left and continued on to a 400 year old distillery… says it’s still using some original equipment. If you paid like a dollar, you got a “teeny shot taste flight” of 5 of their rums… a 10yr, a 4 yr, a REALLY SWEET ONE, a kinda spicy one and one that everyone said is turpentine… they served that one last.

Stopped at Stoutt’s before heading back.

That’s it for this post… enjoy!

Arriving at Sugar Mill, Tortola, BVI 01/15/22

[pics incl] We stayed at Sugar Mill on Tortola 01/15/22-01/22/22. This place has a history. It was a rum distillery and much of the original structures still exists (much was damaged during the devastating hurricanes). We were told that the dining room roof has no hurricane lashing, it’s just so heavy, not even that last hurricane budged it.

Many of you travel and could no doubt write incredible articles on the places I visit (or might), however, many of my readers do not travel. I have foodies on this list😉, and photographers who could outshine me. I write… for me. But I try to include a little bit of everything…. for others. Feel free to ask for more details or provide me with more information (or corrections). Some of you have asked for “foodie” info, others for geography type stuff that I’m gonna just call… maps 😉 Some more pics, others more descriptions.

I can talk to my device to type for some of this but overall, my brain still doesn’t like toooo much time online. It takes more effort to edit the photos to add dates or captions. I’m still kinda trying to go “in order”

Keep in mind that you can click on the photo to zoom in on your device. You can also switch between mobile and desktop view in you browser… for different blog views.

I do have photos from our first night in St Thomas but they are not in my album I specifically made and I’m too lazy to hunt them down right now!

We noticed all over the Virgin Islands roam wild chickens.

We asked our driver from the airport about all the wild chickens and she literally about died laughing…. see.. laughing so long I had time to pull up my phone and take a last photo [it’s a thing I do: http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2014/05/19/if-you-are-going-to-die-laughing/ ]

Her reply: those aren’t chickens, those are clocks, they go off every hour.

The food at Sugar Mill…. I could never do it justice, just trust me…. trust us, when we say that you would have a hard time finding anything better ANYWHERE. Breakfast was served at the beach cafe and dinner up in the main hall.

Here are a few photos from our first day/night at Sugar Mill.

Pelicans often sat on the stands near the water.

They knew I am allergic to shellfish.

but Jeff is not, he ate seafood almost every night!

I teased my parents one day and said “what I see”

but then I said “what Jeff sees” and sent the photo from the previous blog… but Jeff likes this one better (We are both in this one 😉)

For some reason… I always … had sand…. even when I thought I rinsed it all off before heading back to the room…. nope. The owner was sad when she explained that prior to the hurricanes, the beach had been pristine, not a rock in the sand, and sandy beach was farther out. Unfortunately, it’s still too rocky to really go out and play on this beach. The plan is to fix it all up at the end of season. They were more than willing to take us to “play” at any other beach we wished.

Before dinner, we had txtd some photos of our room and view. Cute that they “lit the fire for us” 😂 and I took a short 30s video and sent to the kids. (videos don’t upload well right now)

Still shot for ya’ll

The photos are unedited. It really is THIS PICTURESQUE. The water really is that blue/green

This almost describes every night of our stay. Don’t worry, I’ll keep posting more though😉

Here the map coordinates as requested

Enjoy
