Pheasants Beware

[pics incl]  Jeff & Will went w/ their shooting buddy out to his parents in Kansas to go Pheasant hunting. Not sure if they took a group picture like I requested but sounds like 9 guys & 2 dogs.

Later, they txt’d & said “the group” was successful!

How to Keep a Journal

Several of ya’ll have asked me how I do this [blog/diary/notes/journal].  I use a couple of phone apps now and/or still get on computer and yes, I’m not above handwriting [although the brain clot kinda stopped me in my tracks there].  A few have commented that you want to “do this better next year” or “New Year’s Resolution” etc  I’m gonna ramble some advice in no particular order AND… I may come back and add to this:

Think of it like writing a letter or even jotting down a post-it note.  It’s that simple.  I often tell people whom have elderly parents w/ Alzheimer’s to put a calendar-type spiral notebook in the middle of the table AND LEAVE IT THERE.  That’s how you start your “journal”  This is NOT a diary like “dear diary I need a date to my sisters wedding” If you’ve got secrets, get a diary and keep it under you pillow so everyone know where to find it ;-P

Why a spiral? because it closes up nicely but can still be WIDE open and “lengthy” enough for this assignment… and hopefully not get torn & lost.

Why the full calendar type [Im talking where it’s like a week view when open with one day length and a notes section somewhere, maybe across the entire bottom]  If you are feeling adventurous, go for the loose leaf binder one day per page folder, but you’re gone lose half of it 😉

Why leave it there? on the table? To help EVERYONE.  the person w/ memory loss NEEDS it to stay here.  it’s part of your meals now.  accept that.  EVERYONE can assist but it needs to be in his/her voice/handwriting so he can look back and see this… I’ve had enough feedback on this advice that I think it needs to be in this persons handwriting if at all ossicle.  ESPECIALLY if it’s early onset.

if there is no memory loss then EVERYONE gets to write, just initial it.  It’ll be fun I promise but it has to STAY on the table.  Just do it, it’s not clutter 😉 [NOTE: a neat twist on this: have every family member keep there own journal and write about their day, then share at dinner]

Start like this:

  • Today I went to the park and did … … … or [NAME] came to visit and we played bridge. or Suzy had a densit appointment.  or  The dog ate my homework.

It doesn’t have to be fancy just get in the habit of writing EVERYTHING down.  Try to put SOMETHING on every date.  [NOTE:  Its not all gonna be exciting or happy, I write daily notes, they don’t all make the blog]

THEN, once you have the hang of it, get fancier, add more descriptions

  • Today at the park a group of college kids were racing kites in the wind but we just enjoyed the sun and walked 2 miles along the tree line near the lake,

That right there is probably enough to evoke a MEMORY in someone who might pick this up 6 months later and go “OH YEAH, we did that.”
Now that your notebook has some good wear on it and it looks like you have the hang of writing down some of those ADJECTIVES I keep telling ya’ll to use ;-P

[I looked and I’ve done two posts on the subject of adjectives. one was to EXPLAIN adjectives and the other is an inside joke using adjectives and referring the other HA! http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2014/05/19/if-you-are-going-to-die-laughing/ ]

It’s now your turn to try maybe going a step or two farther w/ your new habit.  ADD MORE adjectives, tell the story, but THEN, give us a picture too.  Here’s what I do, I try to take a picture that tells a story.  That’s half the battle.  If the photo TELLS the story for you they you just literally TELL THE TRUTH… BUT… YOU ADD ADJECTIVES ;-P

[Imagine our younger kids say 5-13]

  • While we were walking near the lake Ashley decided to make friends w/ a duck family and squatted and scooched VERY slowly toward them while the mama was teaching the babies to dive.  William was nearby splashing at the water’s edge and didn’t see any of this going on.  Mama duck decided Ashley was WAY TOO CLOSE but instead of going after Ashley, she sounded the alarm which sent the ENTIRE flock soaring over all the kids.  The entire flock, except one little duckling that went after 5 year old William, spilling him into the lake.  Heather and Courtney ran over to pull him out but I just took a picture instead.  I’m not laughing 🙂 Good thing I ALWAYS keep changes of clothes in the truck.
  • [ YOU INSERT FUNNY PHOTO HERE ]  By the way, this story is kinda true, I just made it up from a couple of trips we took one weekend (see the end for comments on WHAT REALLY HAPPENED)

But you are thinking that you have that photo on your phone or camera.  If you know how to print that off do it now.

  • Otherwise, “there’s an app for that”  I suggest you download something simple on your phone like Walgreens /CVS/[local drugstore ]   I know there are literally 100’s but hear me out.  IF you need assistance doing this, your best odds of getting human help is gonna be at your local drugstore.  Get the APP.  If you need help w/ downloading that, get a kid/grandkid 😉
  • Got a camera, take the SD card to the drug store.
  • if you are arguing w/ me then you already know what to do, go do it, this is a suggestion for beginners.
  • at the drugstore photo area a HUMAN will help you and show you what to do.  go at an off time if possible, not “rush hour.”

Put the photo(s) w/ your date book.

  • WRITE the date on the back of the photo along w/ a note so if it gets separated, it can stand alone and be identified.

Now you have a journal.  Some of your days may be blank.  Some of your days mate be boring. Some of your days WILL BE SAD.  some of your days are gonna have coffee stains spilled on them (or spaghetti or cherrios).  Some of your days may take up more than one day and need another sheet of paper stapled to it.  Some of your days might have photos.

That’s your journal.  At the end of the year, you get a pendaflex (one of those stretchy binder things), you put your journal, you date it.

START A NEW JOURNAL.  you’re gonna have ideas on how to do it differently.  DO THAT. 😉  Get fancier, make it a book if you like, a keepsake, you got this.   OR…, just keep it a simple spiral calendar, no photos needed.

NOTE: if you’d rather go for electronic JOURNAL there are 100’s.  I just use the one that is the guy who took over the Palm app I used for years, so I’ve had this App for YEARS.  It’s simple & it works.  I’ve had questions before and he’s answered  It’s called [ Moment Diary ]

For my blog, I use WordPress and the WordPress App.  Microsoft Word syncs w/ the WordPress engine too so I [had] options.  I don’t get on the computer too often.  This draft post has literally taken me several hours over several days, when it used to probably taken me 30 min.., sigh.  Anyway.  Wordpress.com if you are feeling adventurous. [I host my own but they are good]!

Good luck!

[NOTE:  While I was making up a storyline from stuff that really happened to us, I couldn’t REALLY remember exactly what all had happened that weekend, it was several funny stories all rolled into one… so I went on a HUNT and I kinda struck “gold”  I’m gonna create a whole other post for that one, I’ll put the link here when I am finished  AND Here ya go:  http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2007/07/04/july-4th-weekend-2007/]

How Many Engineers…?

[pics incl]  I took Josh up to visit Tony at work, and let’s just say the “working” apparently had entailed  assembling a popcorn machine.  Josh was invited to setup the “inaugural pop”

Then someone dumped it out and the “thang” broke… hence the title

HOW MANY ENGINEERS DOES IT TAKE TO FIX A POPCORN MACHINE?

I offered to drive over to STEM and get William& Aden “ya know, there’s a STEM school a couple blocks away, maybe they can fabricate a new part 😉 ”

all better now

Josh and I Are Not Doing Dishes

[pics incl]   It’s a snowy day and Josh came over while I was avoiding doing my dishes.  He told me he was avoiding doing his as well.  We fixed hot cocoa, got the fireplace to stay on and DID NOT do dishes 🙂

Yesterday about this time the sky was clear but don’t let that fool ya! It was about 10 outside!

Today, it’s also about 10 out but we heard that it’s supposed to get down to -4!

and another Sadie picture:

Josh told me that he doesn’t feel as tired w/ this chemo and they will check his numbers on 12/08 to see if he needs platelets on 12/09.  Sending good thoughts his way that his numbers stay strong!

Parenting at Your Best

[pics incl]  These days, there are not too many things (or people) that can get me to step into a loud country dance hall, Roni Lambrecht’s book release party is one!

I cannot express how much joy I have for Roni & John at the release of “Parenting at Your Best”

I posted info with her link here http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2016/10/29/lambrechts-book-info/

If you had ever heard any parent around here say out loud “I wish my kids [fill in blank] like Dalton…” [usually it was said in conjunction with a great big bear hug he was giving], you will understand why there is a long line tonight!  People have been asking the Lambrecht’s to share “their secrets” for YEARS

Tonight we celebrate with them, the accomplishment that this book embodies.

Roni, you are my inspiration.

There are also companion journals to assist your family with having in depth conversations.

Get those too, you want them, you need them.

[ NOTE UPDATE:Roni posted a comment below (luv ya back) but since not everyone browses the comment section, I’m posting the link to purchase your books on Amazon here: amazon.com/author/ronilambrecht   ]

.
And for those of you NOT LOCAL that are here for them in your hearts.  Here are a couple picture I snapped FOR YOU.  There were pros here taking “real pics” for them.

A few of the neighbors hanging out…. look who we found!

Teaching Sadie to Work 12/02/16

[pics incl]  Courtney is working from home today from Sadie’s house 🙂 I went to go help out Andrew this time because Shelbi started a new job a few weeks ago.

She took one look at me, threw out her arms and HAHA… ! only cuz William isn’t here.  Courtney vowed to change this.  Courtney fed her & got her to sleep.

Sadie woke from her nap later and hadn’t seen us, so I covered the side with a blanket and she played and cooed for a long while.

Then she asked Courtney to teach her how to work from home.  First, you need a laptop.

Sadie needs a closer look at what they are learning.

What’s so interesting Sadie? maybe I should come see…

Uh-huh… I see, the ‘ol magazine in the book gag … ;-P

Sadie’s really teaching Courtney “how NOT to work” …

“Thanks for the book grandma!”

… of course, these photos are not shown in the order taken ;-P You know me, I took about 50 over an hour and then Courtney & Sadie graciously staged the two w/ the book/laptop to round out the funny pix story!

enjoy

Random Photos Taken Thru 11/30/16

[pics incl] Ya know, I browse thru my phone photos as I’m finishing my blog drafts and I have all these stray photos… this is sometimes where the frase blogworthy vs bloggable comes from ;-P  Some of these make me laugh.  I don’t necesary remember them all BUT lucky for you… I’m pretty good at journaling… sooo, most of these HAVE NOTES!

AND, i just realized I guess I did do a blog last week?!  ok, I go back thru and see what I missed….

Jeff FINALLY got his photo from the Von Miller Charity go cart racing with Bradley Roby

Then I have this adorable pic of Sadie that I have no idea how or when I got?!  What’s all over her face? is she EATING? now I have to go down there…

We all had fortune cookies, I’ll give you one guess which one is mine.

Courtney read mine and actually stepped back away from me…

My sister Andrea, Mark & Hayley went to Disney World and while walking around just happened to run into our cousin Jon (Bacon), Alison & Morghan (no idea whom is taking photo… Domenic?)  And NO, they did NOT know?!?!

Remember that picture of the sunset? well apparently I also took a great picture of my feet.  I was about to delete it but it made me laugh… because I have on camo-pants.

It’s a long story but the short version is “wash day”  The long version involves Claudia bringing handmedowns to Courtney that… fit me.  I was going camping that day and swiped the camo-pants just to annoy Courtney.  Flash forward to wash day.  Now, flash forward to my parents’ arrival and my mom brought up a camo Nike shirt that I swiped, just to mess w/ Courtney.  Now… Jeff & Will are going hunting next weekend and I wanted him to have a reversible orange-camo jacket but because he keeps growing we weren’t sure what size… I just know he’s BIGGER than me.  So I tried it on and Jeff said he had to ask William if he even wanted a sleeveless one.

“awh, you look cute in camo.” 🙂

Saturday morning, Josh asked if he could escape the electricians at his house.  I always ask him if he’s hungry (cuz w/ chemo ya never know, it can come and go either way).  He just HAPPENED to walk in while Jeff was making omelettes… and he was hungry so I promptly made him pick his plate right back up and march back over to Jeff so I could take a picture for the sole purpose of teasing Debbie ;-P

Tesla vs Bama

[pics incl]  Will & Heather got into a txt’ing battle.  Heather is trying to be disowned by saying Roll Tide?!?

But meanwhile, William is countering with photos of his field trip and test drive w/ Tesla for robotics.  And NO, he didn’t drive!

Vascular Neurology 11/29/16

Ugh, I didn’t get the printout of what he said but basically he suspects it’s what Courtney has been saying… me & my arm is not having an anxiety attavk 😉 (hance switchin neiro docs) and its Raynars? or something? she googled it a while back 😉

And “like a good arm” it started acting up in the doctor’s office cuz appartently I’m a walking barameter now and there is some sort of storm nearby rolling in over me!.

Apparently it is a “not uncommon” thing in  head clots to have this thing with the hand/arm getting cold & white and a simple drug that guess what… also trates migranes (which is basically what i am now, on big walking migraine & weathe definitely affects me like migraine)

and on migraine front… he wants to add imitrix (migraine med) to tackle any severe pain & see IF THAT will work…. as needed

he “possibly” wants a different set of MRV of chest/neck (and yes we told him about the vision doc request)…. but he wants all the records … first.  which of course DID NOT, get sent like i requested…. grrr.

Lots of discussion about Xarelto and whether or not I need to continue to take it, which I’m sure the hematologist will be thrilled to know that SOEMONE, anyone will be willing to have a discussion with him recarding xarelto!

At this point, it’s a collect all the records, review all the records, meanwhile I will try this drug for my arm/head.  Imitrix of needed for any severe headpain/migraine type pain… and go from there.  Next appt 12/21/16.

THIS… is why I switched neuro docs:  http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2016/07/13/neurology-appointment-07132016/  in the hour I spent with the “new neuro” http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2016/11/07/another-neuro-appointment-110716/  she referred me to thies vascular guy who in just a few minutes came up with a diagnosis & treatment (well so did Courtney 😉 …. the diagnosis that is).  I’m not saying he’s right & it’s working but……. the words vascular neuro NEVER came out of other neuro’s mouth (at least not that I can read back through my blog and find…) and neither did Raynar’s! or the drug he prescribed!

Hematology 11/28/16

He actually “fired me” … and I think that’s a good thing ;-P  at this point nothing has changed.  All my bloodwork is the same and indicates that I do NOT have this lupus-anticoagulant disorder thing, which would mean that I could possible stop taking the Xarelto.  But right now, we are just going to stay in maintenance mode, pending all the new doctors, etc.  So… Nothing new to report, no new appointments scheduled.  He gave me a stack of cards to pass out to all the new doctors that I’m about to start having.  He did stop in mid stenence at one point because appaenently my Thyroid doc wrote a paragraph or two about “new neuro doc” and apparently he compleletely agrees! 😉 [ http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2016/11/11/thyroid-appointment-111116/ ]

Here is the results of all the bloodwork done over the summer that we might do again should another doctore think it necessary or want to see new results for another reason:  http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2016/07/11/hematology-appt-07112016-2/

Happy 49th Anniversary to My Parents, Alan and Patsy Bacon

[pics incl]  My parents are here, it’s their 49th anniversary, so of course, La Fogata was on the menu.  HOWEVER, what you may not know: shortly after our last visit to La Fogata, Jaima had a glass break into his right rist rupturing his carpal tunnel artery & tendons.  He’s been out for 3 months!  We keep going in and calling and checking on him…. and we were told he would be back TONIGHT 🙂  He cannot serve but he can “expediate” or soemthing. or whatever, HE’S THERE! So this is a multi-function trip to La Fogata.

First CONGRATS to my parents!

Then the kids w/ Jaime and I realized… Will is taller than Jaime?!?! WHAT?! just happened? Jaime is FREAKING OUT! not just a little bit either… he is FREAKING OUT because William was the little itty bitty guy when we met Jaime.  He was about 3 1/2. and NOW… He’s taller than Jaime.

Then, Theresa had to come Join in the festivities but we couldn’t get the photo to take right but hey, I attempted to be in a photo.  I broke the camra.

Jaime sent over shots of tequlla, ya know Jeff, i bet that was for mom 😉

Jaime came back later and had to catch up on everyone.  Drew… Jaime says HI!  He held his hand out and said his 4 1/2 yo daughter is about this tall… I laughed becaues I think that’s about how tall Courtney is now 😉  It was nice catching up with him and I think he asked about everyone we’ve ever brought into La Fogata (or even into the restaurant in CR 😉 ), we’ve known this guy a while.  We were missing the owner since his passing but no worries, we seem to be in good hands, I can’t remember everyone’s names, but I promise to find out (I used to know them).  If you have never been to La Fogata, stop by and tell them we sent you!

I was trying to find older photos of Jaime and William together.  A quick search of the blog found this:  http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2012/06/23/la-fogata-062312/   but I wasn’t sure when I decided that I NEEDED to start making sure Jaime was IN MY PHOTOS.  I found one w/ Theresa in the background and that made me laugh http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2011/05/18/heathers-graduation-dinner/  I KNEW we’d known her a long time too.  I decided to just do a quick search of my photos but head is bothering so I’m not HUNTING.  I didn’t find Jaime and William but what I DID find… HAHAHAHA…was the OTHER HALF of Roni’s photo from here: http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2014/01/10/marc-is-here/     and NOW… I can’t stop laughing 😉

20091223_img0339-1

This crazy group included the Lambrecht’s and the Goldey’s along w/ Marc feeding Jeff and Jeff feeding Marc 😉

20091223_img0340-1

ALL the kids are down at the other end of the tables.

La Fogata is a place that we come to share our memories.  So thanks Jaime for helping us celebrate Mom & Dad (grandma & grandpa) this weekend, just wouldn’t have felt right without you (actually, THEY requested YOU).

THIS is why Jaime is SOOO important to our family:  http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2010/12/21/la-fogata-jaime/

Happy Thanksgiving 11/24/16

[pics incl] Ashley went to visit Heather but she is back and my parents also drove up from Texas.  Before they got here I teased them and said I was cooking for them

I was really re-seasoning the cast iron

I stripped it (looks a little rusty cuz the oven kinda got steamy but that’s ok)

After 6 coats of flaxseed oil vs usual crisco method… they are nice & shiny black!

Oven is all better now, on to pies.

Heather txt’d while I was making deviled eggs and said she was elected to make deviled eggs.

She’s talking about this:  http://blog.scottsontherocks.com/blog/2014/02/06/death-by-deviled-egg/

I don’t like deviled eggs but they came out ok cuz there aren’t any left.

I think our spread here looks appetizing, Jeff was in charge ;-P  Mom made him homemade turkey gravy so he was spoiled!  Ashley made her famous cranberries and Willi made the Jello which I screwed up (yes, I know, you can’t screw up jello but I did 😉 cuz I bought I wrong ones so he had to improvise)  Courtney made the cookies

BUT, there was a moment they couldn’t get the table pulled apart for the leaf.  Jeff and Courtney started, and as you might imagine, that went something like… Jeff dragged the table and Courtney across the room!  Jeff and William played tug-of-war for a bit before success.

And it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving w/out an appliance malfunction

Hope yours was wonderful and blessed!

[NOTE 12/01/2016 : apparently I must show proof that the cast iron survived ;-P

like i said, i’d never “not used” Crisco but so far so go on the flaxseed.  We’ve always kinda liked the advice from Americs text kitchen so when i stumbled across their befuddlement… i paid attention
